Young Chefs Get Creative at Seattle-area Cooking Camps

 

Many of Seattle’s cooking schools open their doors to the younger set in the summer. Choose from an array of camps, ranging from a quick introduction to cooking new foods, to a professional setting where students graduate with a diploma, a formal dinner, and a personalized chef’s jacket.

Kitchen Coach Cooking School

Kitchen Coach offers several cooking camps including Basics for Budding Chefs.

“The kitchen for the week is their place; a place they can come and experiment with food, gain confidence, work with others and expand their repertoire of food knowledge,” says teacher Deb Brownstein.

This cooking store near University Village offers a cozy setting. Owner Nancie Brecher explains that her classes build “social skills and confidence. The kids feel at home cooking here. And whether you are five or 55, cooking is relaxing.” Each day, kids explore a different cuisine including American, Italian, Japanese, and Mexican. “Young chefs will rub elbows with many professional chefs all week long becoming competent and proficient in the kitchen by actually practicing hands-on culinary skills with them for five hours a day,” explains Seppo Farrey of Blue Ribbon Cooking School. Classes run Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 3:30pm. PCC Kids Summer Camps

Finally, PCC offers “Around the World in 5 Days” cooking camps throughout the summer. Kids cook French, Indian, Mexican, Italian and Japanese meals. Menus are vegetarian and include dairy and eggs. Classes run Monday through Friday, from 10:00am to 12:30pm. Choose from five locations: Greenlake, West Seattle, Issaquah, Edmonds, Redmond.
