Voice of the Community: New Amsterdam Symphony present Brahms’ German Requiem this Weekend

If you don’t have your tickets yet, this Friday night, 8:00 p.m., the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra and the Young New Yorker’s Chorus will join efforts in a performances of Brahms’ German Requiem at the Symphony Space.

Found in 1976, the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra’s energy and diversity attracts musicians and music lovers from all walks of life: members range from professional classical musicians to actuary analysts who also play in rock bands. The orchestra also brings in a different conductor for each concert cycle, so the audience gets a fresh “flavor,” and the ensemble enjoys a different musical perspective.

Despite the differences in age, career, and musical experiences, and despite the changes in conductors’ rehearsal techniques, New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra displays a unity in rehearsals and performances. Orchestra members share the goal of upholding high musical standards, and bond through the struggle to shape a difficult technical passage into a convincing musical gesture. The orchestra also enjoys genuine loyalty from its members: the supportive environment and friendships with fellow musicians brought cellist Analissa Martinez back to the ensemble even after her cello career becomes more established. Analissa is not the only one– violinists Roslind has been playing since 1976!

Conductor for the current concert cycle, Matthew Oberstein, said that for him, ” it’s very rewarding to work with such a diverse group of people to help create a unified performance for people in the audience that we may or may not know. ” The community orchestra merges 75-80 unique characters into one harmonious whole, through which the spirit of the community is celebrated. Come check it it out tomorrow!

Tickets are $20 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, and $12 for children.
