DESCRIPTION:Karen A. Matthews\, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychiatry\, Epidemio
logy\, and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh\, where she is Progra
m Director of the Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine Research Training Prog
ram and Director of Pittsburgh Mind Body Research Center. Several assumptio
ns have guided her research. First\, epidemiological constructs linked to c
ardiovascular disease provide clues to constructs that are important to stu
dy from a psychological perspective in order to understand the mechanisms u
nderlying the associations. Matthews' interests in such constructs as Type
A\, gender\, race\, and socioeconomic status arose from this assumption. Se
cond\, it is most informative to investigate these epidemiological construc
ts at times of transition\, because change often can provide a unique windo
w on underlying psychobiological processes. Under these assumptions she has
pursued several lines of research primarily targeting the adolescent and m
enopausal transitions in relation to the development of negative affect\, s
ympathetic nervous system activation\, hormonal factors\, and subclinical c
 ardiovascular disease.

DESCRIPTION:Peter and Rosemary Grant have been studying Darwin's finches on
the Galápagos islands since 1973. Their fieldwork is designed to understa
nd the causes of an adaptive radiation. It combines analyses of archipelago
-wide patterns of evolution with detailed investigations of population leve
l processes on two islands\, Genovesa and Daphne. Their work is a blend of
ecology\, behavior and genetics. They have collaborated with investigators
to estimate phylogenetic relations among the species of finches and their r
elatives on the continent and in the Caribbean\, and to identify the molecu
lar mechanisms involved in the development of beaks that vary so conspicuou
 sly among the species.

tion of Richard Misrach: On the Beach\, Misrach directly references Nevil S
hute's 1957 Cold War novel and the 1959 film based on this novel\, from whi
ch he took the exhibition title. These twenty large-scale photographs\, sho
t from a hotel room adjacent to the beach\, situate and then abandon the vi
ewer in the vastness of the sea or sand\, devoid of horizon line or point o
 f reference.
\n
\nIn addition to the twenty traveling works\, the Henry wi
ll present several of Misrach's early gelatin silver prints\, selections fr
om the Desert Cantos series\, including three sky pieces from the Henrys co
llection\, and new photographs from the artist's most recent body of work.
These additions will complement the touring photographs and will present to
viewers a broad spectrum of the artist's oeuvre.
