DESCRIPTION:"I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins "Benjam
in Button\," adapted from the classic 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald ab
out a man who is born in his 80s and ages backwards. A man\, like any of us
\, unable to stop time. We follow his story set in New Orleans from the end
of World War I in 1918\, into the 21st century\, following his journey tha
t is as unusual as any man's life can be. "Benjamin Button" is a time trave
ler's tale of the people and places he bumps into along the way\, the loves
he loses and finds\, the joys of life and the sadness of death\, and what
 lasts beyond time.

DESCRIPTION:Filmgoers in San Francisco will unite with audiences in 172 add
itional cities across five continents to view and judge the next generation
of filmmakers when the 12th Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival screens a
t Balboa Theatre on Thursday 9/24 @ 7:30pm This year the festival receive
d 428 entries from 36 countries around the world from which 10 short films
‚Â all 14 minutes and under in length ‚Â were selected. Countries repre
 sented this year include the USA\, Australia\, Mozambique\, UK\, Israel\, S
pain\, France\, Sweden and Italy in what festival organizers describe as a
‚ÂCinematic Olympiad.‚ÂThese films will not only entertain a global aud
ience but be judged by them as well. Filmgoers will be handed a voting card
upon entry and asked to vote for the one film they feel should win. Votes
are tallied at each cinema and forwarded to the festival‚Âs headquarters
in NYC where the winner will be announced on Tuesday\, Sept 29th at 9:15 pm
. (Date pushed back Sunday 27th this year due to Yom Kippur)With some of ou
r past finalists achieving the highest recognition the industry has to offe
r by going on to be nominated for and even winning an Oscar in the short fi
lm category\, including two finalists in the past two festivals\, the Manha
ttan Short has come to be known as one of the best launching pads for filmm
akers in the world today. In one week\, over 100\,000 people from as far nor
th as St. Petersburg\, Russia to as far south as Melbourne\, Australia to v
enues in all 50 US States will view and vote on these 10 films. ‚ÂWhile t
he goal of any festival is to discover and promote future talent\, the ulti
mate aim of this festival is to bring communities together via ten stories
from around the world. There is no better insight to what is happening in t
he world or how the world is feeling than through the eyes\, ears and lense
s of these short filmmakers\,‚Â said MANHATTAN SHORT founding director Ni
cholas Mason.‚ÂFrom the festival‚Âs humble beginnings when I projected
a handful of short films onto a screen mounted onto the side of a truck on
a downtown Manhattan Street 12 years ago\, to where we are now just blows m
y mind. In keeping with our mission to unite the world via compelling short
films\, we‚Âre gearing up to further expand the festival‚Âs reach by s
creening in every continent around the world during the same week\, with ve
nues in Africa scheduled in 2010‚Â said Nicholas Mason. ‚ÂThis is a one
of a kind festival and anyone can be a part of it. It‚Âs huge!‚ÂFor mo

DESCRIPTION:MIGHTY UKEMIGHTY UKEThink of a ukulele and you probably imagine
grass skirts\, slide guitar and kitchy lyrics\, but far from being just a
novelty instrument\, the uke has a rich history and has profoundly affected
music around the world.Originally brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigran
ts\, \, ukulele music owned the airwaves. Broadway produced ukulele musical
 s. Hollywood produced ukulele movie stars. The little instrument was so ine
xpensive and easy to play that by the early twenties the uke was the most p
opular instrument in the American home and the first musical voice for mill
ions of children. Over the next thirty years the uke was number one\, and t
hen\, with the rise of rock and roll guitar\, faded into nerdy obscurity. U
ntil now.In the internet age\, the ukulele is making a comeback. Ukes top t
he charts in Japan\, Swedish punks thrash uke angst\, California popsters s
erve it to ya ukulele style\, and all of them meet together at the myriad u
kulele festivals from New York to London and Tokyo.MIGHTY UKE travels the w
orld to discover why so many people of different nations\, cultures\, ages
and musical tastes are turning to the ukulele to express themselves\, conne
ct with the past\, and with each other. From the Redwoods of California thr
ough the gritty streets of Paris\, from swinging London through TokyoÂÂs
highrise canyons\, ukers tell the story of the peopleÂÂs instrument: The
Mighty Uke."This film is a must see for pretty much every kind of audience.
It is entertaining\, educational\, touching and I promise it will leave yo
u with a burning desire to get your own ukulele when you leave the theatre.

 eries every three minutes"Chronogram Magazine

DESCRIPTION:Step into the life and work of Art Clokey\, creator of Gumby\,
grandfather of stop-motion animation\, and explore through this documentary
why a man would spend his 85 years on earth playing with lumps of colored
clay. His world famous characters\, Gumby and Pokey\, and Davy and Goliath\
, echo the spiritual path of their creator. Art's journey takes us from the
orphanage to inspiring adopted father\, from the Seminary to the Hollywood
movie business\, and from traditional Episcopalian church values to Buddhi
sm and Indian guru Sai Baba. It is a fascinating life and career in it's ow
n right but also in how it gently influenced his characters and story lines
for over 40 years. Clokey's work is one of the few animation characters th
at have survived the test of time to become a true American Icon. Interview
s with contemporary leaders in animation\, including Director Henry Selick
(Coraline\, Nightmare Before Christmas\, James and the Giant Peach) and spe
cial effects legend Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts\, Adventures o
f Sinbad)\, place Clokeys work in perspective with the history of animation
and explore stop motion's future in a computer graphics world. The evening
will be a tribute to Art Clokey who recently passed away. The event will in
clude the screening of the hour long Emmy Award winning documentary film Gu
mby Dharma by Robina Marchesi\, Klara Grunning-Harris and Tim Hittle follow
ed by a panel discussion with local creators\, artists and stop-motion anim
ation industry people. "An insightful glimpse into the personal and spiritu
al life of an influential career of a great artist and filmmaker's -The Sen
