"Shows Divine at 9th and Pine": The Paramount Theatre Lives On
I smile every time I drive by the Paramount Theatre on Pine Street, the blaring neon sign from the Roaring 20's doing it's job just as well as it did in it's heyday. Completed in 1928, the Paramount is a living piece of Seattle history, one without threat of demolition by condo developers (we hope). The Paramount was built in a Beaux-Arts style, and indeed the theater is reminiscent of the Palace of Versailles when you first walk in: the imposing majesty, the symmetrical statement of power, the in-your-face declaration of the grandiose. Just as Louis XIV humbly proclaimed, "I am the State," so too does the Paramount assert, "I am the Theater." Years and years of 100% pure American escapist fantasy have passed at the Paramount; join the ghosts of Seattle and buy a ticket to your favorite Broadway, jazz, silent movie, dance, family, or comedy event today.
