Upcoming New Los Angeles Folk Festival: Tradition Meets Innovation

New Los Angeles Folk Festival offers a program of diverse, LA-based folk artists on Saturday, August 7.

Folk music, contrary to popular belief, isn’t always traditional. Although it is a genre with a great emphasis on its roots, this does not make it immune to change or innovation. Like virtually all forms of music, folk draws from a variety of influences, whether it’s blues, rock, or indie pop. The New Los Angeles Folk Festival will celebrate this with a program of diverse, LA-based folk artists on Saturday, August 7. There will be the elusive Linda Perhacs, charming acoustic duo Les Shelleys, eclectic band He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, and psychedelic folkie Ariana Delawari, among many others. As described by its creators, the Festival is dedicated to the “traditional and experimental, acoustic and electronic, throwbacks and progressive ideas.”

The venue, Historical Monument 157, is a beautiful old Victorian house that regularly hosts square dances, art galleries, and outdoor concerts, complete with vaudevillian sideshows. It is a perfect setting for a cozy-yet-lively evening of music. Quirky attractions at the upcoming Folk Festival include a beard contest, a copious supply of O.N.E. coconut water, and savory crepes offered by The Little Frenchie food truck. How can you say no? Come to the festival next weekend to hear the wide and colorful range of folk music LA has to offer.

Festival proceeds will go toward relief efforts in the Gulf, through the Environmental Defense Fund.

The New Los Angeles Folk Festival is also collaborating with the Echo and Grand Ole Echo for the Roots Roadhouse Festival this Saturday. Roots Roadhouse centers around the “country side of folk”, featuring artists such as the Chapin Sisters, Dave Alvin & the Guilty Men, and Red Simpson. Hi – I cannot find details about it anywhere and don’t know if this is the right place to inquire, but do you know if people are permitted to bring a bottle of wine to the folk festival? blankets? lawn chairs? I’ve never been to it and am looking forward to it this year.
