Philadelphia is home to a lot of amazing beer gardens, as I covered in a previous piece (Top Beer Gardens). But there is nothing quite like being able to drink a fresh glass of beer that was brewed on site. So in honor of kicking off the weekend, here’s a look at the top brewpubs in Philadelphia.

Nodding Head – What could be better than going to a brewpub? Going to a brewpub that has a trophy case of bobbleheads and a beer called “Monkey Knife Fight” of course. Nodding head usually offers 7 fresh beers on tap that are exceptionally diverse varieties, and it has a well mixed menu with plenty of vegetarian options. it’s beer has also won plenty of medals at The Great American Beer Festival. Triumph Brewing Company – It offers a location that’s a little more swankier since it’s in Olde City, but more importantly it offers up a great selection of beers. From the Munich Dunkel, to the Irish Red, to the German Pilsner it has so many different varieties down, and offers a varying amount of alcohol percentages. It’s menu even offers up things like a lobster roll, and a brewer’s burger with beer braised onions and roasted garlic aioli. It also has three different locations throughout PA and NJ that manage to keep different brews on tap. Triumph Brewing Company

Sly Fox Brewhouse & Eatery – Although it’s in Kimberton and not Philadelphia, it’s one of those exceptions that are too good to ignore. Sly Fox is one of those rare beers that manage to taste exotic from a can. So when you get it fresh from the tap it’s the nectar of the gods. Sly Fox Amber IPA was voted Philadelphia Favorite Beer at a judging in the spring of 1996, only a few months after the doors opened, and other awards followed, including a Gold medal as “Best Bitter” for Sly Fox ESB at the annual State College Microbrewers & Importers Exposition in 1998. the best reason to come here by far though is it’s annual goat race. people from all over come to race their goats in the parking lot. Manayunk Brewery & Restaurant – During the 1800′s and into the 20th century, Manayunk was known for the manufacture and sales of fine textiles. Krook’s Mill, now the Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant, was one of the linchpins of the then booming industry. It closed it’s doors in 1992, But four years later the facility was Brought back to life as a space for retail business, a fine eatery, a brewery and as an entertainment complex for both neighbors and visitors alike to enjoy. Now it offers a diverse variety and has a distinct selection of seasonal ales.And the menu offers such staples as Filet Mignon, and St. Louis Ribs. Manayunk Brewery

Earth Bread And Brewery – It’s kind of hard to go wrong with a place that makes it’s one craft brews and makes it’s own flat bread pizza from a hearth. and you have to respect them more when reading their mission statment –

Dock Street Brewing Co. – Overall Dock Street just might be the most distinct of the above. It moved into a converted firehouse that was perfect for it’s brewing needs. And it has done some innovative things like getting espresso beans from it’s neighbor, Satellite Cafe, and using them to construct it’s own espresso stout. It also has a Sudan Grass beer which is brewed using sorghum, a grain that can produce gluten free beer. it also uses PA sourced wildflower honey, and is Spiced with hibiscus, lemon grass, rooibos, and rose hips.. And if you think that’s innovative wait until you try it’s fresh pizza’s like the Flamen Kuche. Dock Street Brewing Co.
