What’s your take on “Best-Of” albums? Yeah? Well, I think that, too.
That being said, it doesn’t matter what you or I think, because The Dandy Warhols’ “The Capitol Years 1995-2007” isn’t a “Best-Of” album. Yes, it’s comprised of previously recorded songs, and yes, it is indeed the best of their past nine albums, but such a label would lessen the merit of what is a well-developed, surprisingly unique record. Most exciting for you diehard fans – that is to say, me, and a handful of others as devoted to the cult of Courtney Taylor-Taylor as I – is the brand-new piece, “This is the Tide.” As upbeat and kinetic as a David Bowie tune, the song wraps up fifteen tracks chronicling the evolution of the band through their years signed to Capitol Records…a less-than-ideal relationship that represented the power struggle between an artist’s creativity and a for-profit business.
The album is a nice mix of the Dandys’ more popular hits, as well as a handful of lesser-known tracks spanning their entire body of work. Included is “Bohemian Like You” off the album “Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia”, which the typical Dandy Warhols fan would recognize in the movies “Igby Goes Down” and “Flushed Away”. “Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth”, the lead single from 1997’s “The Dandy Warhols Come Down”, also makes an appearance, the song’s surreal music video lending a great deal to understanding the ultimate quirkiness that characterizes the Dandys. Other tracts include “Smoke It”, “We Used to Be Friends”, and “Boys Better”.
Let’s recall the most important piece of information for you Philadelphians. The Dandy Warhols will be playing the Electric Factory, located at 7th and Willow, on Sunday, November 7th. The show kicks off at 8:00 with Hopewell, the Dandys taking the stage at 9:00. Tickets are $25, which is well worth a full evening of rock-and-roll that will leave fans yawning at work the next morning, and can be purchased here. Get your tickets early, and prepare for an experience unlike the majority of other shows you may have seen up to this point. As is so eloquently phrased in the title of their first album…Dandys Rule, Ok?!
