Sweet Soubrette will be playing The Bowery Poetry Club on January 8th at 8 p.m. Sweet Soubrette, a pseudonym for singer Ellia Bisker, has been playing the New York City scene since 2006. Bisker is the vocalist and ukele player, and main focal point of this one of a kind act. Her vocal sound is reminiscent of contemporaries Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michealson, and Nicole Atkins, but has more of a distinctive steam punk style. Ellia Bisker puts her own spin on things and has been described by Bust Magazine as a “Brooklyn fishnet clad femme-fatale.” Her witty lyrics, humorous sub-context, and seductive stage presence all contribute to the performance that is Sweet Soubrette.
Saturday night’s performance will be in celebration of Sweet Soubrette’s new album Days and Nights which was released on January 1, 2011. Accompanying her on stage will be additional musicians, violinist Heather Cole, percussionist Michael Dobson, and bassist Bob Smith, along with a ton of collaborators from the New York circuit. The show’s entourage will consist of musicians from existentialist pop outfit The Debutante Hour, experimental new music ensemble ThingNY, the beloved Hungry March Band, and Stacy Rock who be joining in on all the new album tracks. Although the album features Ellia and aforementioned musicians, this evening’s show is going to be quite the production.
Originally Sweet Soubrette’s first release Siren Song, was a solo project that comprised of Bisker’s vocals and ukele playing. Now that she has branched out to include a full set, Sweet Soubrette’s sound has become a fuller and richer experience. Bisker, who is also a published poet and writer, has been known for her lyric driven sound. However, since Days and Nights has been released Sweet Soubrette’s reputation may showcase the evolution of more expressive substance. Her new tunes on Days and Nights (although dark in tone like Siren Song), have moments of charismatic joy and sultry delight.
The Bowery Poetry Club is located at 308 Bowery New York, NY in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. If you want to check out Sweet Soubrette’s transformation from singer-songwriter to full blown New York kitsch punk orchestra, go to The Bowery Poetry Club’s website to purchase tickets.
