 r\, soloists and orchestra. We continue our year-long celebration of Mendel
 ssohn’s bicentennial by performing two of his early compositions: his rad
 iant cantata "Vom Himmel hoch" and his brilliant "Magnificat". Both works e
 xhibit youthful energy and enthusiasm with their sparkling orchestral writi
 ng and bravura displays for choir and soloists. Also on the concert is "Can
 ticum Mariae Virginis" by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara\, whic
 h captures the divine mystery of the Nativity as a movement from darkness t
 o a glorious blaze of light. Finally\, Georg Schumann’s setting of "Vom H
 immel hoch" paints a vivid picture of the heavenly reaction to the earthly 
 birth on Christmas night. Joining Opus 7 will be the St. James Catheral Sol
 oists\, Lisa Pontén\, soprano\, Kathryn Weld\, mezzo-soprano\, Norman Smit
