Harvey Milk

There was no doubt that Harvey Milk are seasoned musicians that ain't afraid of leaving everything they got on that stage. You can't fake that kind of heart! I was blown away by the range this metal-ish band had.

I should be sleeping now but I can't come off my dark cloud. They were amazing!

No Reverb!!!

It turns out Harvey Milk doesn't like the reverb. "No Reverb", that was the only audible direction the band gave the sound guy at the funhouse tonight. Actually, it was more like "no f#$@ing reverb!" but you get my point. Yeah, they didn't need any reverb to do what they did tonight. That helpless little building had to take on a sonic blast that knocked anyone who knew anything about Harvey Milk, back to the early 1990's.

I got all up to stage right until the vapors from the "john" was too much. Then I angled my way towards the middle. I look up at the dingy red velvet curtain as the backdrop to Harvey Milk's monumental affront to peace and order.

This show took the ego out of everyone in the room. As far as I could see, the entire front half of this packed room were banging their heads to the rhythms of their powerfully unpredictable drummer. They were so lound and so deliberately patient, the audience was completely at the mercy of this hard, humming, distorted band. The singer thanked the crowd for being so cool to him. Everyone got into these guys.

The last song made my teeth rattle and my eardrums burst. It must have been 15 minutes long I reckon, but I'm here to tell you. It wasn't nearly long enough. For one minute during their set, I looked all around and almost every eye in the joint was closed, every head was swaying. There are two types of shows a band can play. There are shows to entertain and there are shows to change history as we know it.

Harvey Milk took one of the oldest forms of music in the western world and turned it into something copletely new. They even busted out a touching cover from the lead singer of the Pouges. I doubt anyone in that room would argue that Harvey Milk put on one of the best shows Seattle has ever seen. I'm serious!

Thanks to Infinite Shows for promoting this event. When I wake up, I think I'll blog about the show too!

UnWanted

It's a good looking movie that would be best served if no one in the movie talked.

Mogwai

Comment by: Fred Roth

I first heard Mogwai in South Carolina

I was on a job assignment and had some time to check out the local record store. This was a few years back, when there still were local record stores. I picked up Mogwai: Happy Songs for Happy People. It instantly became one of my favorite CDs.

RAWSTOCK LIGHT and DARK Film Fest

Rawstock Light and Dark Film Fest Was Big Fun

The light portion of the night featured some great twists and turns. The intermission artist feature was beautiful and the dark portion was quick and deadly!

The light side included the world premiere of Shawn Telford's "A Night In The Sunlight" was a short film about a reunion between two people that share a special connection. I'm not going to spoil this for you, I will say that Shawn Telford is on the verge of amazing things. He can flat out direct a film. If you like film, you need to see this man.

Justin Freet's "New Beginnings" was really funny! He is a student of timing and it shows. Don't know who Justin is? I posted a video blog about him at http://blog.culturemob.com/rawstock-light-dark-film-fest. Check out the great acting he does there!

On the dark side; Calvin Lee Reeder's "Rambler" was not your typical wandering stranger flick. You may recall Calvin Lee Reeder's performance as Jim in the film "My Effortless Brilliance" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183684/ (directed by Lynn Shelton).

The act that stole the night was not a film at all. It was a singer by the name of Kaylee Cole and she put on an amazing live performance during the intermission. Just beautiful!

Thursday July 17th Review

There I was, slowly approaching the front door of The LoFi when I heard the trio of Josh (Rawlings), Evan (Flory-Barnes) and Jeremy (Jones) laying out a beautiful tone. The music hit me immediately. After that point, I was relaxed and ready to hear what was next.

Moments later, sax players, trombone players and even a word sayer put their own touch on the night. One sax player had a flurry of musical phrases that reminded me of Courtney Pine. The place was packed, with a crowd of enthusiastic listeners. People were friendly and social, it was the kind of party you hope to stumble onto. The Hang is a event you can proudly recommend to your friends.
