DESCRIPTION:Description of the event: Now in its 5th year\, The River City
Bluegrass Festival is a rare chance to see the ‘best of the best’ in ac
oustic and bluegrass music. Most of the artists are coming from the Nashvil
le area. RiverCity is an interactive\, move-around-and-make-friends music
event. The festival\, which is the largest winter bluegrass/acoustic music
festival ever held in Portland\, features two and a half days of non-stop m
usic and workshops. The festival offers music on two stages\, and\, as at
any good bluegrass festival worthy of its name\, there will be plenty of ja
mming\, both at the convention center and at the headquarters hotel.
\n
\nT
his year the RiverCity Festival was nominated for Best Bluegrass Event of t
he Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association\, which\, given th
e relatively young age of the festival and its location (the Pacific Northw
est vs. the south)\, was a tremendous honor and demonstrates the progress R
iverCity has made in such a short time.
\n
\nIn keeping with this year’s
theme ‘Honoring the Tradition’\, the lineup includes Dr. Ralph Stanley\
 , a
\nfixture in the bluegrass world since the days of Bill Monroe\, The W
hites\, The Dan Tyminski Band\, The Whites with Jerry Douglas\, The Kruger
  Brothers\, Psychograss\, J.D. Crowe & The New South\, Hot Club of Cowtown\
, Longview\, Sierra Hull & Hwy 111 and The Jim Kweskin Jug Band. For those
of you who aren’t necessarily bluegrassers\, this lineup is again one of
the strongest ever to appear in Portland. Most of these bands have won ma
ny Grammy & IBMA Awards and are truly legends in this genre of music.
\n
\n
Special Hotel Feature: The Red Lion Convention Center is hosting a late nig
ht jam on Saturday from 10pm to 6am in the Grand Ballroom. Food & Beverage
  will be available.
\n
\nThe fine folks at Lagunitas Brewing Company\, who
are donating all of their net proceeds to Ethos Music Center\, will be back
to provide the beer part of the Beer & Wine Garden. Lagunitas will be offe
ring their usual fine selection of fine brews. Nehalem Bay Winery will be
 selling wine beverages.
\n
\nThe Festival’s non-profit partner is Ethos M
usic Center. Ethos receives cash through the Festival’s partners. Ethos
' award winning programs even the educational playing field by making the b
enefits of music education available to every student regardless of income.
Free instrument rental is available for students on free or reduced lunch
at school. The name is derived from the ancient Greek "Doctrine of Ethos" t
hat held that music can change your thoughts\, moods\, and actions. In lig
ht of the numerous studies that demonstrate the tremendous benefits of musi
c education\, Ethos believes that every child should have the opportunity t
o make music. Ethos was established in 1998 in direct response to budget cu
ts that limited music education in public schools. Visit www.ethos-inc.org
for more information about their programs.
\n
\nThe RiverCity Bluegrass Fe
stival will be conducting school assemblies during early December to showca
se the sound of bluegrass and other ‘roots’ music.
\n
\nKid’s Progr
am! Now in it’s second year\, Chick Rose will be heading up the program
for the small fry. Whether a young person has ever touched an instrument o
r has been playing for a while\, your child will have fun with the Kid’s
Program. With qualified young volunteer musicians\, children will get to pl
ay with the basic bluegrass instruments: guitar\, mandolin\, banjo\, bass &
resonator guitar. Some of the area’s most talented young musicians will
be on hand to help guide little fingers and teach them to play a song by t
he end of the day. The cost is $50.00 for an entire day of instruction\, wh
ich is split into two sessions and includes two adult admissions for the Fe
 stival on Friday.
