Sex and the City on the Big Screen, Finally!

Hooray, and I echo the chorus of ladies who will be waiting in line for tickets to this movie with Sarah Jessica Parker and company! Women loved the HBO show as did most of the men forced to watch it, even if the whole show's premise of single, sassy women was upended by the finale in which all four leading characters, even Samantha, walked away with the man of their dreams. Oh well, Hollywood and America loves a happy ending, and what is happier than romance beginning anew, before the arguments about dirty dishes surface? Find a theater and get your cosmo on with the thinker, the cynic, the romantic, and the voracious vixen!

I remember getting forced into seeing the Sex and the City series on HBO. To be honest, got sucked into it just like everyone else and have seen every episode. I liked the Cynthia Nixon character, Miranda Hobbes the best.

Sex and the City

What a royal treat this movie was. All the ample anticipated nights, among glasses of wine and cartons of ice cream were finally being rolled into one. I must say I had certain expectations for this movie and very low expectations for anything converted to the big screen. In my experience, books and other shows have always been a let-down when crossing the threshold. But, being the brave one, I was determined to give the movie a chance. The opening song is now apart of my ITunes. With its clever usage of Fergie and the main song on steroids, it defiantly is a song to be played among girlfriends driving windows down, hair whipping in the wind. The characters glowed, the fashion: …incredible. The movie was full of laughter and tears, a ball full of roller coaster emotion. Staying always true to the show itself, Sex and the City the Movie, proved to my biased views of the big screen, that re-creations can be just as good as the original.

I had exceedingly low expectations for this movie but when a work friend invited me to go with her I felt that, in some odd way, it was my duty as a thirty-something single gal to check it out. Let me just say this: I never watched the show. And yet. I was, by the end of the film, laughing, tearing up, and generally enjoying ever new outfit change and witty exchange between these quirky gals.

I was concerned about the cultural expectations/mandates implicit in a movie about, primarily, single women. But I was happy to see that SATC’s message is not one-size-fits-all. Without judgment, the film applauds each woman for choosing her own, unique path, including (gasp!) that of a fulfilled, successful, childless, husbandless fifty-year old woman!

Go see this movie.

If You're a Woman, You're Obligated to See this Movie

Whoever first used the label "chick flick" must have had this movie in mind during creation. This is the quintessential girl movie, with designer fashion, marriage, more fashion, pretty wedding dresses and even more fashion as its themes. Did I mention fashion? (My friends and I spent more time pointing to the outfits we wanted for ourselves than actually watching the plot of the movie.)

Aside from all the fashion, I thought the story was great too. It's a roller coaster of emotion with each character, mostly Carrie and Miranda, but all 4 have their moments. Even though I didn't watch the series all that much, I still loved the movie. Of course every chick flick caters to the woman's ability to feel sixteen emotions at once, and this was no exception. I laughed, I cried, I was surprised, I wanted heels and shopping, and at the end of the movie, I was smiling.

Even if you missed it in theaters, it's worth a rental. That way, you can pour yourself a cosmo and watch Sex and the City at the same time! Sounds like a perfect night, right?

"Big" trouble with "Sex" Movie

Carrie Bradshaw how could you. After six seasons of emphasizing the importance of single and fabulous, this movie stood against everything our hero ever epitomized. Dried up and desperate she settled for “less than butterflies,” by taking a justice of the peace ceremony in opposition of the fairy tale wedding she wanted and deserved.

Despite the elegance and excellence of the scene featuring the shameless product placement of wedding gowns ,featuring every trick a fashion whore could ever desire, from Vera Wang to Vivenne Westwood. Big stood her up at the alter. Not only did her and her four friends bend over and take it from Christopher Noth like he was a single bachelor on Wall street, but they wasted precious movie time. Instead, they could have been having illicit Sex and The City style sex instead of nursing a “broken-hearted” Carrie we never knew would go back for more "Big" abuse in the end.

Unfortunately, I am a die-hard. I love “the girls,” but hated the way the movie went. The fab four should have come back with vengeance. But the ladies seemed to have lost the fight for love after forty. Miranda, Char and Sam all defeated along with Carrie, who chose to take back the man who teased and tormented her throughout the entire duration of the series.

The girl’s were great because they once defined the phrase "single and fabulous" for sexy women everywhere, city or not, but the entire idea of the movie seemed to be a “Big” mistake.

Exquisite Tie-Up of Plot Lines

I will admit that I went to see SEX & THE CITY, THE MOVIE with the same morbid curiosity with which one gapes at a 12-car pile-up on the highway. I was a huge fan of the series, but I did not know how well it would translate to screen. Would they just be dragging the corpses of the old cast out for a final song and dance?

I am happy to say that my pessimism was proven ridiculously wrong. Carrie's agony and attempts to rebuild her life after Big rejects her at the altar were rendered with such exquisite pathos that it made her comeback all the more triumphant. It also takes a lot of talent and skill for writers, directors and actors to be able to make an audience's heart go out to an adulterer like Steve - and this made Steve's contrition and Miranda's long-awaited forgiveness all the more poignant. I loved how Charlotte had found happiness in adopting Lily, only to find that she and Harry had conceived another child after being told they couldn't - and this made all of her pratfalls (series one to six) on her way to the picture book life all the more meaningful. Finally, Samantha actually gives her relationship with Smith the best of all possible shots - and this shows a marked transformation of the nympho who went through men like magazines.

Jennifer Hudson's character brings a breath of fresh air into Carrie's storm-tossed world. The only thing is, they never explained how Stanford and Anthony, who were arch enemies, became lovers.

Still and all, I would go so far as to give the movie, which could stand on its own apart from the series, an "A" (even if I'm just giving it extra credit for not disappointing me).

Sex and the City

When a series ends much sooner than it’s’ fan base would prefer a follow up a film will inevitably succeed in the box office. When it came to the four women holding the screen Sex and the City, the movie was a complete success.

The dialogue, the chemistry, and the humor between the women was everything you fondly remember about the series, or if you are like me, the type of moments you enjoy reliving through TBS or the DVD collections.

At the center of the film of course, was Carrie and Big’s relationship – and this sadly was a disappointment. At the end of the series, after several seasons of heartbreaks and heated sexual encounters between the two, Big chases Carrie to Paris, wins her back and they share a long anticipated kiss as he says, “It’s always been you.”

However, for some reason at the center of the film we find Carrie and Big’s relationship, tested yet again – complete lack of originality. Surprising though, the movie makes up for its shortcomings through Miranda and Samantha’s relationships with Steve and Smith. And even though I was not entirely happy with the film, I am sure it will not be the last time I see it. Hell… I will probably buy it on DVD.
