About This Movie

There are heroes. There are superheroes. And, then there's Hancock. With great power comes great responsibility--everyone knows that--everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic and misunderstood, Hancock's well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough--as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think--until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey, and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock's greatest challenge yet--and a task that may prove impossible as Ray's wife, Mary, insists that he's a lost cause.

Hancock's History

I'll be the first to say that when the trailer for Hancock made it's way to the web I was in. Will Smith+Superhero+Alcohol problem=pure genius, or so the trailer promised and for a time it was. Will's performance along with his co-stars Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman were great, along with the incredible special effects it felt incredibly believable, however the final twist-- Hancock's initial creation-- left alot to the imagination, unfortunately. Once the audience discovers who he acutally is you want to know more and more and more and maybe that was too much for the production team to deliver. It's understandable that the writer and director wouldn't want to shift focus from the present day --hopefully not a spoiler-- but, when you have a character as interesting, empathetic and intriguing as Hancock you have be ready for the audience to ask " And...?" No doubt Hancock is a film that shouldn't be missed and appreciated for what it is, an inventive, exciting and captivating venture into a new perspective on a genre that needs some diversity and I hope to see more.

Superhero Overkill vs. Will Smith & That Blonde with the Oscar

Superhero movies are the thing. Hollywood is going ga-ga over them, and stars are going out of their way to don those capes. But then why did the creators of Hancock decide to create an original superhero with alcohol problems (see: Iron Man's sequel), no origin, and Superman's powers? The story was alright, the actors were good, and Will Smith being a jerk is always fun to watch. (But let's not mention those horrid special effects that make Smallville look good.) Basically, the movie lacked originality when it tried to be original. At least it had a few good laughs. The biggest question for me, though, was why in the world would someone with an Oscar (the beautiful Charlize Theron won for Monster a few years ago) want to play this part? Working with Will Smith couldn't be that big of a draw. Maybe stars really do enjoy being hooked up to a bunch of wires and thrown around.
