Many Russian soldiers die
Hanks is good as the former Texas congressman who helps the Afghanis take down the Russians by getting Congress to covertly fund the purchase of black market weapons. But it's Philip Seymour Hoffman, as a cynical career CIA agent, who really makes the movie. What's amazing about the movie is how they're able to tell a really complex story in 97 minutes and not only make it entertaining but also comprehensible. Too bad we blew the end game in Afghanistan afterwards.

it's 'the west wing' only not as good
yeah, it's fast and talky and features Big Stars in tom hanks and julia roberts but c'mon, where's the conflict? there's less friction here than on one of those maglev bullet trains. even the rotten-egg ending is self-satisfied in this age of "authentic realism". on the plus side, there's philip seymour hoffman, the best actor of his generation. here he's pudgy and pissed. the movie shines when he's onscreen, dies when he's not.
