About This Movie

A recent college graduate, Barry B. Benson wants more out of life than the inevitable career that awaits him and every other worker in New Hive City--a job at Honex making honey. Barry jumps at the chance to venture out of the hive, and soon encounters a world beyond his wildest dreams. When Barry inadvertently meets a quirky florist named Vanessa, he breaks one of the cardinal rules of beedom--he talks to her. A friendship soon develops, and Barry gets a guided crash course in the ways of the human race. When he shockingly discovers that anyone can purchase honey right off the grocery store shelf, he realizes that his true calling is to stop this injustice and set the world right by suing the human race for stealing the bees' precious honey.

Mediocre Movie

I took my 3 ½ year old daughter to this movie and she was falling asleep. I don’t think you’ll see or hear many kids dropping one-liners from this movie. It was kind of like Seinfeld meets Looney Tunes meets South Park although it wasn’t really funny or entertaining. At times it seemed like they were trying to emulate the humor of Shrek, but didn’t really pull it off. I don’t think the animation was half bad, although it wasn’t at the level of Pixar.

Lame plot - lacking fun

I read that this movie was pitched - "let's make a movie about a bee" - before the story was developed . . .and man, does it show. The movie opens with 15 minutes of colors, characters, and fun (The Pollen Jocks - with Rip Torn as the General were very cool and the scene with them buzzing through the city sky and then down into Central Park was very, very cool) only to quickly degenerate into a very weak plot about Bee's suing the honey industry. To justify this bizarre story bee keepers are portrayed as cruel slave masters - sadistic grins and evil laughter aplenty - and the bees as oppressed slaves.

The courtroom drama is extremely boring - mostly adult jokes with references to Haliburton and Enron - as well as gross stereotypes of corporate America (yes, we all know of the inherit evil in that massive honey cartels out there). Stereotypes aside, it's just not that damn much fun for the kids - both of mine sitting quietly and not really getting the whole thing.

The parts for an intelligent, spirited movie were assembled during the opening act - but were tossed aside by writers who I'm guessing have no children OR if they do, are having them raised by the help.

The Honey trial (the second act - both longest and most dreadful) is followed by a crudely cobbled together parable about work / happiness, action / implications, and acceptance.

In general - considering the amount of money and the talent at the disposal - this is a startling flop. Shallow characters, bizarre plot, and lacking true laughs this is a DVD rental - maybe.

If Finding Nemo and the Incredibles grade an A+ this is hovering in the C- range.

thoughtless and not funny

This movie was just not funny. All the jokes seemed to center around the gag that the characters are.. Bees!! Get it?? Get it??
The story seemed to be moving towards a lesson about living life to the fullest, but then deteriorated into the boring courtroom scene JR mentions. The script and most things about the movie seem to be thrown together without any thought, and what was with the sexual undertones between the human lady and the bee? Was the lesson 'don't sue people or you'll end up rich and lazy?' NOT funny NOT well written Why did I let Jeremy make me watch this disaster of a movie? The shots of bees zooming around were nice enough, but not enough to warrant a full movie.
gack.
