It’s time for more awesome comedy courtesy of The Philly Improv Theater! All of PHIT’s house teams have just returned from the Del Close Marathon in New York City and are riding high after very successful performances! Here’s a look at what you can expect this week:
Wednesday, August 4th
8pm: Guilty Pleasures hosted by Brendan Kennedy – $10
Comedian Brendan Kennedy is a connoisseur of terribly written works: found scripts, embarrassing e-mails, and much more. Brendan and his guests will present these literary atrocities in all their hilarious glory!
9:30pm: TV Party! hosted by Paul Triggiani and Rob Baniewicz – $10
Paul and Rob are big fans of television from the past and want to share their love with an audience. They will be joined by some special guests to present and discuss some lost and forgotten television shows, some of which were forgotten for probably a good reason. Lessons will be learned, FREE BREWS will be enjoyed!
Thursday, August 5th
8pm: Hey Everybody! hosted by Aaron Hertzog – $10
Comedian Aaron Hertzog invites some of the best stand-ups in the city on stage to perform with him. This installment features David James, Steve Gerben, Blake Wexler, Luke Giordano, Carolyn Busa, Christian Alsis, and Matt McCusker.
9:30pm: Cagematch Philly: M@& vs The Ones Your Moms Warned You About – $10
The equivalent of improv Thunderdome, Cagematch pits two improv groups against each other and the audience decides who is better. This show features the returning champs The Ones Your Moms Warned You About facing off against M@&, which features Matt Holmes and an unsuspecting audience member (read more about M@& here).
Friday, August 6th
8pm: Stranger, Danger and Friends – $10
Performers Sarah Cowdery and Alex Gross present a two-person improv set that will have you rolling in the aisles. They will be joined by another group (that’s right folks, two groups for $10!).
9:30pm: Fletcher and King Friday – $10
This show is the best that Philadelphia has to offer. Fletcher and King Friday are two of PHIT’s house teams and they are at the top of the improv game. They always put on a fantastic show!
11pm: Improv Jam hosted by PHIT’s New House Team – FREE
Want to try your hand at improv? This is your chance! Audience members will be brought on stage to perform in some fun short-form games. The night is hosted by PHIT’s newest house team (which includes a certain CultureMob blogger – ME!) and will feature a sneak-peak of what’s to come from them.
Saturday, August 7th
Cross-state friends Irony City will be performing their unique brand of improv, the best that Pittsburgh has to offer. They are joined by PHIT house team Activity Book, one of the best groups in Philly. GO PENNSYLVANIA!
9:30pm: Messing with a Friend – $15
VERY EXCITING!! Susan Messing is a great teacher and improviser from Chicago who has performed at The Second City, iO Improv, and The Annoyance Theater. This show features Messing and fellow improviser Becky Drysdale, a Second City and UCB alum. Described as a “joyful, uncensored, and improvised romp through hell,” this show is guaranteed to be amazing. Get your tickets in advance!
11pm: Sketch Up or Shut Up – FREE
PHIT’s schedule ends with the city’s only sketch open mic. Come to see some fun sketches for free, OR take a chance and perform your own sketch!
The Philly Improv Theater is the best source of improv, sketch, and alternative comedy in the city. All shows take place at The Shubin Theater, 407 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147. Tickets can be purchased at the door, but to ensure you get one, just check out PHIT’s tickets page. THREE CHEERS FOR COMEDY!
