Philadelphia is Ready for the 2012 Winter Classic
The rumors ran ramped, no one knew where it was going to take place, but it is now official. The 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will take place January 2nd at Citizens Bank Park right here in Philadelphia. The hometown Flyers will take on their cross-town rivals the New York Rangers.
The grunge match will take place at 1PM ET and will be broadcasted live on NBC in the US. The tradition lives on with one of the greatest rivals of NHL history. “The Rangers-Flyers rivalry is one of our very best,” said Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner. “It is only a short distance from Broadway to Broad Street, and over the years, these not-so-neighborly teams have provided an assortment of memorable games. I have every expectation that the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will provide more great moments to remember.”
Two seasons ago, The Flyers beat the Rangers in a shootout of the last game of the season. Who ever came out victorious, won the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The rivalry has never cooled down ether. These two teams have been battling it out since the 74-75 seasons.
Both teams have a slew of great players that will make this year’s Winter Classic enjoyable. The likes of Chris Pronger, Jaromir Jagr of the Flyers and Henrik Lundqvist, Brad Richards of the Rangers will be skating that day.
“The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic is arguably the biggest game played during the NHL’s regular season and it is a wonderful platform to feature our great sport to millions of worldwide viewers.” Said Flyers owner Ed Snider. “It’s an honor for the Philadelphia Flyers to serve as ambassadors for the NHL. We look forward to hosting the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic in Philadelphia and showcasing our great city to hockey fans throughout North America.”
For a second year in a row, the NHL will team up with HBO sports and their hit and groundbreaking “24/7” reality series. It will highlight both teams leading up to the classic, also chronicling their meeting on December 23rd at Madison Square Garden. The premiere episode is set to air Wednesday, December 14th at 10PM ET.
