Love Never Dies Reviews. Phantom lives on U.S. tour

“Love Never Dies,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to “Phantom of the Opera” has opened at the Adelphi Theater in London. It takes place in Coney Island, ten years after the events in Phantom.

In his review, New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley calls it “a poor sap of a show,” finding it confusing, implausible, slow and heavy. British critical reaction was more mixed. The Independent’s Paul Taylor gives it five stars (the highest), deeming it “phabulous.” The Daily Telegraph’s Charles Spencer gives it four stars and calls it “Lloyd Webber’s finest show since the original Phantom.”
The Times of London’s Benedict Nightingale gives it two stars and says it has a “dismally implausible plot.” The Guardian, three stars. The Daily Mail.

Meanwhile, “The Phantom of the Opera” remains the world’s most successful show, having opened on January 26, 1988, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical. It is still running, making it the longest-running show in Broadway history.
