John Cale, Founding member of the Velvet Underground, whose list of credits could fill what history used to call phone books — that John Cale is set to play the Showbox at the Market this Thursday, December 6th with Cass McCombs. Tickets are $29.50 + fees presale, and $35 DOS. Cale is touring in support of his latest release, Shifty Adventures in Nookiewood, his first full-length album since 2005.

From the Showbox:

In 1965 he co-founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed. Though best known for his work with the band, Cale has produced a massive body of work that ranges from tastefully arranged strings and piano over Dylan Thomas poetry to barely-suppressed, nigh-psychotic aggression set to high-energy avant garde rock. Cale\’s style is impossible to pin down, as almost every album contains new experiments and influences. He is also well known as the producer of such works as the debuts of The Stooges, The Modern Lovers, Patti Smith\’s Horses, and Nico\’s The Marble Index.

For any fan of modern music\’s history, one could do far worse than attend this show. His contributions to well-regarded music of nearly the the past half century should be reason enough to attend. The fact that Shifty Adventures in Nookiewood is an entirely listenable record can\’t hurt either.

At times tinged with a nineteen-eighties enthusiasm, like a more experimental Depeche Mode, Shifty Adventures is full of densely produced tracks with Cale\’s signature baritone sometimes standing alone, and sometimes being transformed through digital manipulation. Cale\’s fans can rest easy knowing that he hasn\’t diverged too far from his need to experiment. With the fifth song, ‘Nookie Wood\’, things begin to veer into a Beck-esque land of digital bleeps and a psychedelic drones with a post-modern pop sensibility. In the next song, he\’s playing with a slow jam techno beat and he\’s autotuned and steeped in irony. This will surely be a memorable show Seattle. Get your tickets.
