BaconBacon Makes Everything Taste Better

Like butter, many a budding culinary talent has cheated by tempting our taste buds with the addition of this heavenly pork product. Once reviled as a heart attack inducer, bacon has made a roaring comeback onto the breakfast plate and beyond. It is no longer unusual to find bacon in cupcakes and other desserts. International Bacon Day, the brainchild of a University of Colorado at Boulder graduate student, is traditionally celebrated in the U.S. on the first Saturday before Labor Day. This year it is Saturday, September 3, 2011. Once ashamed and hidden in the shadows, bacon lovers of the world unite to celebrate cured pig meat. Bacon lover web sites like Bacon Today and Royal Bacon Society may celebrate bacon all year long, but for one day a year, the “bacon-analia” can reach new heights of indulgence. Just ask the guys at Epic Mealtime who create no meal without bacon.

Celebrating Bacon Day

How does one celebrate Bacon Day? Back, Collar Cottage, Gammon, Jowl, Hock, Middle, Picnic, Side, or Slab …it\’s all bacon and it\’s all good. The Bacon Day entry on Wikipedia suggests that “celebrations typically include social gatherings during which participants create and consume dishes containing bacon, including bacon-themed breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, and drinks. So, break out the skillet and fry up some bacon, or soy bacon…vegetarians are welcome, too!
