More Info

Philadelphia\’s main attraction on New Year\’s Eve draws thousands of people to the Delaware River Waterfront each year. Conveniently located within a short walk of Old City, Society Hill and South Street, Penn\’s Landing becomes a festive party with revelers of all ages delighting in a breathtaking fireworks display.

Viewing Tips

For the midnight show, a good plan of action would be to go out to dinner with your party of family and friends and try to finish around 11 p.m. The 6 p.m. show offers the perfect chance to enjoy dinner before or after the show, still leaving time to head to any parties you may be attending later that night.

No matter which show you’re attending, if you\’re not already in the neighborhood, take a cab or SEPTA\’s Blue Line to Old City, at which point you\’ll have just a five minute walk to Penn\’s Landing.

You should arrive with just enough time before the show to secure a great fireworks-watching location. Timing is also important because if it\’s especially cold outside (as December in Philadelphia is known to be), you don\’t want to arrive too early.

The show, which is about 15 minutes in length, has a beautiful backdrop — an illuminated Benjamin Franklin Bridge and, if viewed from Camden, the Philadelphia Skyline.

After the show, make your way back to Old City, where you can choose from countless places to continue the celebration.

Places To Watch

As the clock approaches midnight, there are a few places besides the Delaware River Waterfront where you can go to watch the fireworks at both 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

You can get a great view from Old City, where restaurant and bar patrons file out to the streets to watch the show.

You could also celebrate the New Year aboard the Battleship New Jersey on the Camden Waterfront, where you can watch from the ship\’s main deck as the fireworks go off over the Delaware River.

And if you\’re in the mood for ice skating, visit the Blue Cross RiverRink on Penn\’s Landing for a New Year\’s party on ice while the fireworks light the night.

Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam at World Cafe Live

At the age of 11. “I was in the car with my dad, and he put on a cassette of Dire Straits’ ‘Sultans of Swing,'” explains the 21-year-old guitarist, singer and songwriter. “I just fell in love with the music then and there. That track changed my life, and I realized, ‘I really want to be able to do that.'”

Hailing from the Isle of Man, the tiny kingdom in the middle of the Irish Sea, might have posed a challenge to that childhood epiphany for a lesser talent. Instead, Davy just borrowed his father’s acoustic guitar and painstakingly learned to play the blues rock sounds that influenced him. Two albums later, and after logging thousands of miles on the road – Davy’s anxious to get back out there to play. “You should play music because you love doing it,” he says, “If you can hang in for the long haul, you’re doing what most people can’t, and you’re incredibly lucky.”

And for Davy Knowles, the next stop is the world.

Brothers Past with Orchard Lounge at Theatre of Living Arts

Since early 2000, Philadelphia’s BROTHERS PAST have managed to stand out from the crowd by merging bits of electronic exploration with indie-rock flavored anthems. The band’s sound is new and energetic, big yet introspective, a merger of rock anthems and electronic exploration. Their 2005 release, This Feeling’s Called Goodbye, on Sci-Fidelity Records, saw the the band receive national praise, from critics, bloggers, hippies, hipsters, and regular joes just like you! Many festival appearance followed, including a slot at Bonnaroo in June 2006. Band members are currently working on material for a new record, and dabbling in various side projects, like Tom Hamilton’s American Babies and Biodiesel.

Downtempo, space disco, house, tech, b-boy era electro, hip hop, soul, and funk – if you can move, Orchard Lounge will back you up. Formed in Chicago in 2000, OL is the collective of Ben Silver, Spencer Lokken and Bethany Lokken. This versatile trio has enlightened dance floors nationwide with their eclectic mixes, from sunset chill-out to bass-dropping tech house, and an array of other futuristic sounds. Theirs is a democratic mission: to expose as many people as possible to the artists they admire and respect. What sets Orchard Lounge apart from other club DJs is, well, you won\’t always find them in the club. In recent years they\’ve built a reputation as a hard-touring festival act and set-break crowd favorite, frequently supporting The Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The New Deal and Future Rock. They\’ve also played alongside heavyweights like Bonobo, Lindstrøm, DJ T, Jamie Jones, Booka Shade, Metro Area, and Kevin Yost. As The Disco Biscuits\’ de facto hype men (and woman), they\’ve had the rare pleasure of performing for thousands at world famous venues like Red Rocks and the Hammerstein Ballroom, constantly keeping the crowd engaged with a unique mix of turntable and live-band improvisation. Outside the booth, the members of Orchard Lounge continue making music: Spencer is a classically-trained violinist and regularly plays with a chamber ensemble in Chicago; Ben has studied guitar for more than ten years, and continues to write and produce. Bethany quit the clarinet in college and has never looked back. Despite their affinity for live music, OL’s focus hasn’t shifted since the group’s inception almost a decade ago: to provide sophisticated and stylish DJ sets that are appropriate in a variety of settings, from the dance floor to the couch.

PEX: Playloop presents Lotus and MSTRKRFT

From CultureMob’s Upcoming Philadelphia Concert Watch for December 2009.

MSTRKRFT (pronounced “Master-craft”) is an electronic music group from Toronto (The Beaches), Ontario, Canada who are signed to Last Gang Records. The group was started in 2005 by Jesse F. Keeler formerly of Death from Above 1979 and Al-P (Alex Puodziukas) formerly of the Mississauga electropop group Girlsareshort. Al-P was also the producer for Death from Above 1979s album You\’re a Woman, I\’m a Machine as well as several of (Jesse\’s former band) Black Cat #13\’s records. The duo has been close friends, as well as work partners, for a long time. MSTRKRFT also produced Die Mannequin\’s first EP, How to Kill, and Magneta Lane\’s second LP, Dancing With Daggers.

Lotus is known for concerts in which a complex light set up is used and their use of varying set lists that employ frequent group improvisation. The concerts are often recorded by amateur engineers (tapers) and posted online for others to listen to. The band has undertaken a number of tours and have performed at festivals including Jam on the River (Philadelphia, PA 2007 and 2008), Wakarusa (KS 2005, 2006, 2007), and the Rothbury Music Festival in July 2008 and 2009.

The band has performed several themed shows. On October 31, 2008 at the TLA in Philadelphia the show was billed as “Live Fast Die Young: the 27 Conspiracy”. Each of the 5 members dressed as a rock star who died at the age of 27 (Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Pigpen, and Jim Morrison) and the show featured covers by each of the respective bands. On Dec. 31, 2008 the band performed a show that included robot themed covers including Styx – “Mr. Roboto”, Alan Parson\’s Project – “I Robot”, Flaming Lips – “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots: Part I”, Radiohead – “Paranoid Android”, and Daft Punk – “Robot Rock”. On Oct. 31, 2009 at Sonar in Baltimore the Halloween show was presented as “Protein Pills in the Labyrinth”. The band members dressed as different David Bowie characters (including Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, and Jareth) and played “Under Pressure”, “Fame”, “I\’m Afriad of Americans”, “Space Oddity”, “Let\’s Dance”, “Rebel, Rebel”, “Suffragette City” along with original Lotus material.

To kick off 2010, Lotus is planning a New Year\’s run beginning on December 29 at Mr. Small\’s Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA. The band will be ringing in the new year with fans and friends the The Electric Factory in Philadelphia, PA!
