Popular 90s duo Kid and Play

Philadelphia, get ready for Duofest this September 30th-October 3rd!  This festival celebrates the wonderful tradition of two person comedy teams which have been delighting audiences since time existed (everyone remembers the hilarious pairing of Saints Peter and Paul!).  A lot of famous duos focus primarily on scripted work and bits: Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, The Smothers Brothers, Bob and David, and Tim & Eric.  But there is also a long history of improvised groups: Nichols and May, TJ and Dave, and Messing with a Friend (who just performed in Philadelphia last month).  Duofest focuses on this latter group, bringing improvised twosomes together for a long weekend of double pronged laughter!

Duos have an interesting and exciting dynamic on the stage.  There is nowhere to hide when there are just two performers, no room to have a bad night.  Each performer has to be working constantly to create the funny.  Despite these difficulties, duos often have strong off-stage connections that help create awesome on-stage relations and situations.  The great duos can really create magic on stage, much like Harry and Hermione magically captured the hearts of America through their adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (I just read the books, don’t judge me).  30 duos from around the WORLD (Canada counts as ‘the world’) are coming to Philadelphia for the festival; you’ll see groups from Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Austin, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Richmond, Providence, New Jersey, Kansas, and the great wilds of Calgary!  A full schedule and information about the groups can be found on Duofest’s website.

The festival takes place at The Shubin Theater, 407 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147.  Individual shows feature two groups and cost $10 a piece.  Day passes are available for $20 and a pass for the whole festival is just $50.  What a steal!  You can get tickets on Duofest’s site and you should definitely get them in advance!  Duofest is presented by The Philly Improv Theater, Philadelphia’s premiere destination for improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy.    Make sure to check this out so that we can have it for many years to come!
