Matmos
Matmos is Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt, a duo with a brainy and decentered approach to electronica. Most people's idea of experimental music involves wandering guitar riffs and weird bell tones; however Matmos brings the idea of sound experimentation to a new level with the sounds of: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, a bowed five string banjo, slowed down whistles and kisses, water hitting copper plates, the runout groove of a vinyl record, a $5.00 electric guitar, liposuction surgery, cameras and VCRs, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, violins, rat cages, tanks of helium, violas, human skulls, cellos, peck horns, tubas, cards shuffling, field recordings of conversations in hot tubs, frequency response tests for defective hearing aids, a steel guitar recorded in a sewer, electrical interference generated by laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions and balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones on a dinner plate, Polish trains, insects, ukelele, aspirin tablets hitting a drum kit from across the room, dogs barking, people reading aloud, life support systems and inflatable blankets, records chosen by the roll of dice, an acupuncture point detector conducting electrical current through human skin, rock salt crunching underfoot, solid gold coins spinning on bars of solid silver, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, a five gallon bucket of oatmeal.

Sounds Like Amplified Crayfish Nerve Tissue
...which sounds like...what exactly? Is this what happens when super nerds get ahold of electronic music equipment? And will it go down well with the Buddha rolls at the Triple Door?

The Ark of the Covenant was a Toilet Lid
Matmos always reminds me of the story of how Spielberg used the sound of a sliding toilet tank lid for the epic moment in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the top of the Ark of the Covenant was removed (and everybody's faces melted off).
And Speilberg's wife's macaroni and cheese casserole provided the squishy sounds in the trash compactor scene in Star Wars where Leia and the gang are all about to be a lot thinner.
I spent way too much of my childhood experimenting with sound effects into a cassette recorder and making up stories to try and fool my family; a toilet lid and mac n cheese is brilliant but has NOTHING on the shit that Matmos lays down.
But then again maybe Spielberg didn't have access to the sounds of liposuction surgery or cow vaginas.
