Miss Saigon: Don't Miss It!

Miss Saigon is up there with the shows Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera in my mind; the extravagant costumes, emotional lyrics, and ultimately tragic end will capture your heart as it has millions of others. The story of sacrifice, of love won and lost, is a universal theme that makes Miss Saigon a classic- with great music!

Miss Saigon: Powerful Production

Miss Saigon was the first musical I’ve been to since I can remember. The Tacoma Musical Playhouse (founded in 1994) ambitiously brought this thrilling production to the stage under the direction of Jon Douglas Rake (Director/Choreographer) and Jeffrey Stvrtecky (Musical Director). This cast captivated me and guided me through these very exciting acts. Overall, it was a great show. Everyone involved did a fantastic job.

Some highlights I should mention includes “The American Dream” scene. The Engineer played by Micheal O’Hara leads a chorus through a spectacular number that left me in stitches. That scene demonstrated the efforts put forth by the entire cast and crew. Kim played by April Villanueva and Chris played by Aaron Freed, are brilliant together in the “Sun & Moon” scene. Ultimately it was Kim’s impressive final scene that truly made this story so memorable for me. April Villanueva is no stranger to singing or the stage. She has two albums and multiple music performances to her credit. April’s commanding presence, and powerful voice was the best performance I’ve seen in a long time. It would be regrettable not to see her in Miss Saigon. I sincerely hope this is not the last we see of April in a musical.
