If you have a smartphone that doesn’t withstand the water, here are a few things you can do to get it working again.

A lot of stories are circulating on this issue: some say that you can save your smarphone putting it in a bag of rice, some recommend the hair dryer or even the oven. The trouble is that most are myths, and when you give a small fortune for a gadget you cannot afford to risk losing it.

Here’s the best method. Just follow a few simple steps.

Step 1. Turn off your smartphone. It is important to do this in the shortest time, even before removign the water. The idea is to turn it off before the water stream is reaching the components.

Step 2. Clean the the phone with a lint-free cloth. Watch out for ports, speakers and microphones. Remove parts such as the SIM card, microSD card and battery, then dry them off.

Step 3. Put the phone in a zipper bag and insert a few bags of silica gel, which can be found for example in shoeboxes. Add a few things that absorb moisture, such as thin strips of extremely dry meat.

Step 4. Wait 72 hours. Nothing happens if you do not go on Facebook for 3 days.

Step 5. Start your smartphone. If you did everything right, chances are you’re lucky and it works.
