Denver Food Trucks and Street Food come of age

Denver Food Trucks and Street Food are gaining popularity and recognition

Biker Jim. Biker Jim. Biker Jim. Whew…now that that is out of the way, let’s talk Street Food. Newly immortalized by Tyler Florence and The Great Food Truck Race, mobile dining options are now all the rage. Once the province of construction workers and anyone walking on way East Colfax (think Aurora, not Capitol Hill), the food truck is no longer considered a “roach coach” waiting to destroy one’s digestive system and street food is taking on a dignity that is long-deserved. Whether served directly from the truck or through a cart sporting a jaunty umbrellas, street food can be found on the 16th street mall, suburban parking lot, and at every Home Depot. What has changed is the wide variety of cuisines and specialties from which to choose.

Denver has a host of street food and food truck vendors from which to choose

While some of the best Mexican food you will ever taste come from the lowly, all-aluminum trailers run as a one-man show, you will find all over the Denver metro area yummy food from around the world and around the block. These street food trucks and carts are serving traditional American fare (GastroCart, Steuben’s, Walt’s Mobile Bistro, Deluxe Street Food), gourmet and exotic hot dogs (yes, Biker Jim again), desserts (Denver Cupcake Truck, Sugar Lips Mini Donuts), biscuits (The Biscuit Bus), pizza (Sully’s Slice Truck, Basic Kneads Pizza, BRAVA!  Pizzeria Della Strada), vegetarian/vegan (The Steamin’ Demon from City O’City), sushi (Aja to Go), crepes, and of course…mexican (Comida) .

Finding these mobile gastronomical delights can take some work. Some like Biker Jim (one more time!) have a regular spot (16th and Arapahoe in downtown Denver) from which they work the crowds and others like The Denver Cupcake Truck are outposts of brick-and-mortar businesses and rely on Twitter and Facebook to advertise their roaming location. Regardless of how you get there…just get there. The Porker wasnt mentioned? WOW! They do real street food . No burgers and hot dogs. Food that can be found from all over the world using pork. They do the best tamales and mole in town. The chef is amazing with belly and cheek. I think you should really consider trying The Porker. Seriously restaurant quality food off a cart.

    Hey Anita,
If you like Gourmet Street Food, there is one in the works and is due to be on the street early 2011. I had the opportunity to try one of their creations at a pre-screening or should I say tasting a couple of weeks ago… I was floored by the array of flavors in their beef sandwich, I guess I would call it a sandwich. Whatever, it was awesome. They are going to serve Vietnamese food with a twist or as the chef said “Vietnamese infused” food. Look for them and I would love to hear your opinion on their grub.
