Two major Asian community events happen this weekend in the Portland area: Under the Autumn Moon Festival in Old Town/Chinatown, and Festival Japan at Uwajimaya in Beaverton.

The Moon Festival is an important holiday on the Chinese calendar, and traditionally signifies the end of the summer harvesting season. In Portland, the Under the Autumn Moon Festival kicks off at the Lan Su Chinese Garden on Saturday, September 25th, where there will be free admission and activities all day starting at 10:00am, including calligraphy demonstrations, a traditional lion dance, and acupuncture and massage.

Starting at 8:00pm, festivities will continue out in the neighborhood on the Davis Festival Street (between NW 3rd and 4th Avenues) with “Music Under the Autumn Moon”, where you can see performances by Yat Sing Music Club, Portland Cello Project, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, Classical Revolution PDX, Matt Sheehy, Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, and en Taiko.

For more information about the Under the Autumn Moon Festival, visit the Lan Su Chinese Garden website.

At Uwajimaya supermarket, the annual Festival Japan will take place September 25th-26th, 11:00-5:00pm. Attendees can enjoy Japanese food, culture, and performances, and a variety of local organizations related to Japan and Japanese culture will be on hand. The popular Portland Taiko group will perform on Saturday at 3:15pm.
