“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
-Benjamin Franklin
“They who drink beer will think beer.”
-Washington Irving
“All right, brain, I don’t like you and you don’t like me – so let’s just do this and I’ll get back to killing you with beer.”
-Homer Simpson
A good glass of beer always sets the tone for a good time. But there are just some bars out there that offer up a selection of beers that are a lot more immaculate than others. Here’s a look at some of the bars in Philadelphia that will provide you with that selection.
Pub on Passyunk East – The P.O.P.E. is a beer lovers bar pure and simple. the fact that it has 14 taps and and endless selection of bottles is testament to that fact. Add in the fact that they serve food until 1am, have fun happy hour from 4-6, and have a kick ass jukebox make it even better. Pub On Passyunk East
The Irish Pol – Not only does it have 40 taps (!!!). It also has beers that have creative names like Hoptimus Prime, Sweaty Betty, and Crotch Sniffer! And during Happy Hour (5-7pm) it hooks up all 40 of these beers for just $3 a glass. Also on every 9th day of the month it serves Magic Hats mystery beer, Odd Notion, and their #9 for $3 all night long! The Irish Pol
Local 44 – Local 44 prides itself in being a small craft beer bar with tasty chow and a killer juke box. They only have one bottled beer (the Orval Trappist Ale is that good!), but they have an impressive 19 taps and two beers that are served out of casks. and the LakeFront New Grist even gives them a gluten-free beer. and they have a happy hour (5-7) were they discount different local drafts. Local 44
Devil’s Den – Devil’s Den is a Beer Lover’s paradise that has a lot too offer. It constantly rotates it’s taps to the point that it currently has 16 on tap, and has 11 that they are ready to bring in. But if you prefer bottled beer then don’t worry because they have plenty! They also have an amazing happy hour (5-7pm) were every draft is half off. Need I say more? How about the fact that they offer 4 different beer flights where you can try 4 different beers for $8-9? Or the fact that you can take out any draft beer that they have to offer in a growler? Devils Den
ZoT – You might not be adventurous enough to try the Kangaroo or Bone Marrow that they have on the menu (If you’re wondering Kangaroo tastes a lot like steak.). But you will relish in the fact that ZoT is a beer heaven that offers an in depth list of beer that spans the globe. that list is also predominately Belgian. be sure to enjoy them from 10 to midnight since they also have a reverse happy hour. ZoT
Eulogy Belgian Tavern – It’s often dubbed the number one beer heaven of Philadelphia. And considering the fact that it has an impressive list of over 300 international and domestic craft brewed bottled beers and 21 draught beers it’s well deserved. In fact Eulogy was recently Ranked as the fifth best beer restaurant in the United States by ratebeer.com. Eulogy
Monk’s Cafe – Another bar that is often dubbed the number one beer heaven of Philadelphia. And quite frankly when it comes down to figuring out the exact victor of that title the gloves are off! Monk’s loses out on the tap war since it only has 16. But it’s the only bar on the list that has a “Beer Bible” of selections to go through, and a draught beer that has it’s name stamped to it (the Monk’s Cafè Flemish Sour Ale is pretty amazing!). So while it is pretty hard to ultimately decide, at least it’s Philadelphia who wins out! Monks Cafe
