The U2 360º Tour comes to Seattle on Sunday, June 20, 2010 to take over Qwest Field. As of this writing tickets in all price ranges are still available. So if you only want to spend $33.50 or are willing to shell out $253.50, you’re in luck either way.

And since U2 can’t do anything without making a statement, Live Nation, the tour sponsor, “have confirmed their commitment to producing the largest concert tour in history in an environmentally responsible manner with a goal of balancing the Tour’s direct carbon footprint through a comprehensive reduction and offset strategy.” They have all sorts of small “environmental impact reduction programs” slated for the tour, which are good and they should do, but it will be interesting to see how that offsets just one plane flight for a tour that size. I just can’t bring myself to use the “G” word.

The day after Thanksgiving is when the huge holiday tree in downtown’s Westlake Park gets lit up, the downtown streets fill for the annual holiday parade and Santa shows up in the Macy’s windows.

The Macy’s Holiday Parade begins at 8:45 am at 7th and Pine, takes a few turns and then runs north on 4th Ave from University St to the Macy’s store.

The Holiday Tree Lighting at Westlake Park starts at 5 pm and includes the lighting of the Macy’s star. Remember when it wasn’t the Macy’s star? After all that, as long as the weather isn’t too nasty, there will be fireworks. That ought to be enough light to banish the winter darkness. For at least one night anyway.

Finally, Santa is flying in to make appearances in Macy’s window at 4th and Pine starting at 11 am, Friday, November 27th. Check the Macy’s website for his full schedule.

The first annual Green Lake Gobble 5K and Mashed Potato Munch Off is a brilliant pairing of running and walking off calories and then putting them back on with a mashed potato eating contest. You can’t lose.

The 5K run/walk will be held on Sunday, November 22nd. You can register or pick up race packets starting at 8 am, the Kid’s Dash starts at 9:10 am, and the general run starts at 10 am. The run/walk will start and end in the southwest corner of Green Lake near the crew house. Cost to register is $25 if you do it before the day of the race. It’s $35 if you register on race day. You can register online or through several sporting goods stores.

The post-race festivities start at 10 am and you’ll be given a chance to buy raffle tickets for a dollar each. What do you get if you win? A chance to be one of eight contestants in the Mashed Potato Munch Off sponsored by the Greenlake Bar & Grill.

While you’re at it, take time to sign up for a chance to beat John Curley in the Green Lake Gobble. If you do beat him, he just might write a big check to the charity of your choice. But then, do you really need more incentive than just being able to say, “I beat John Curley?” I thought not.

Finally, bring a can of food or two for Wallingford’s FamilyWorks Food Bank. It’s usually tough around the holidays, but even worse this year with the recession. Help people out. There will be a tent near the stage where you can drop off donations.

Of course there will be a ticket presale starting Thursday, November 5th at 10 am that lasts until 10 pm Sunday, November 8th.

When you order the tickets the album will be added to your shopping cart at the price of $10.84. No album, no tickets. Clever? Or annoying? I guess it depends how big a Bon Jovi fan you are. And whether or not you think good tickets to the concert will sell out early.

If Mondays get you down, take yourself to The Paramount Theatre for the next three of them to indulge in some nostalgia. And I’m not talking about nostalgia for your childhood (well, not most of you anyway), but for the good old days of silent movies. And not just any silent movies, but classic science fiction/fantasy “handcrafted films that boldly go where no CGI-laden Star Wars, or Harry Potter movie ever can…” Welcome to Silent Movie Mondays.

Tonight at 7 pm you can watch the 1916 classic, ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.’ On Monday, November 9th, catch ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed,‘ a 1926 German film, and on the last night of the series, November 16th, thrill to ‘The Lost World,’ which has been called “the granddaddy of all prehistoric monster movies.”

“With innovative, illusionary cinematic techniques, trick photography with superimposed images, dissolves and cuts – Silent Movie Mondays: Adventure Stories to Silent Classics explores the early works of visionaries who created a science fiction film world from such malleable objects as cardboard cut outs, clay, and cedars.”

Tickets are $12 and available through STG Presents. You only have three chances at Silent Movie Mondays so don’t delay.

While each band member has had plenty to keep them busy with new projects and solo acts, apparently the time is right for some kind of new iteration of The Cranberries. Lead singer Dolores O’Riordan has been quoted as saying, “I’ve decided to reunite with my former band members in The Cranberries and we will be writing new songs and performing tracks off my new album as well as our greatest hits during the shows.”

The new tour brings them to Seattle to perform at The Moore Theatre on December 7. Tickets are $33 and can be bought through STG Presents.
