The term “80s retro” gets thrown around a lot these days. It’s easy to marginalize acts such as M83, Ladyhawke, Neon Neon, and many others as part of a trend, nothing more. Even though these acts are consciously hearkening back to bygone days, the “retro” marginalization doesn’t fit. I say that they are part of the rebirth of a musical aesthetic– these artists are not simply copying the sound, they are furthering it. Gil Mantera’s Party Dream’s second album, Dreamscape, is a significant addition to this movement. The formerly happy hardcore duo has become a synth-rock trio with an expanded and matured sound: Party Dream has dyed their moody, danceable pop ballads in the dark and beautiful power of the electronic art rock of old. -Consequence of Sound. Ghostland Observatory is not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls. Taking the working man’s approach, Ghostland Observatory spend countless hours in their south Austin studio. They have released two albums in less than a year, and have moved audiences from coast to coast with their live performances and unique style

Ghostland Observatory is the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner. Behrens’ vocal style and stage performances are unique and uncompromising, and he has drawn early comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince. Turner is heavily influenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration, and can only be described as BALLSY.

El Vez and Los Straitjackets December 4th at World Cafe Live

El Vez is the stage name of Robert Lopez, a Mexican-American rock and roll artist, who performs and records original material and covers classic rock songs. Mixing the styles of Elvis Presley and many other American rock artists with his own Latin-American heritage and music, he is known for expressing revolutionary views through his the satire and humor in his songs.

El Vez is known for his high-production value, frenetic stage show, which features two backup singers/dancers (the Elvettes), numerous on- and off-stage costume changes, and between-song monologues mixing humor and political activism.

Lopez’s main persona and style is very similar to Elvis Presley, as his stage name suggests. However, he is not strictly an Elvis impersonator; on his recordings and in his live show, he covers many non-Mexican artists, such as John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, T. Rex, Queen and the Beatles.

Los Straitjackets is an American instrumental rock band that formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 1988. Originally comprising guitarists Danny Amis (formerly of Raybeats) and Eddie Angel and drummer L. J. “Jimmy” Lester under the name The Straitjackets, the band split up soon after forming and reunited as Los Straitjackets in 1994 with the addition of bassist E. Scott Esbeck. Esbeck left the band in 1998 and was replaced by Pete Curry; drummer Jason “Teen Beat” Smay replaced co-founding member Lester in 2005. The band has released eleven studio albums, two collaboration albums and three live albums.

Schoolly D and Bahamadia December 7th at Johnny Brenda’s

Jesse Weaver Jr. (aka Schoolly D) changed the course of hip-hop history as a pioneer of Gangsta Rap. He fused hardcore beats with explicit and gritty narratives about urban life in his home-town of Philadelphia. Schoolly D paved the way for the likes of Ice-T and Notorious B.I.G., among others with such songs as “Gucci Time”, “Saturday Night” and “P.S.K. What Does It Mean?” His music has been heavily sampled over the years, by such artists as The Roots, Jennifer Lopez, Lil’ Wayne and by the Chemical Brothers in their 1997 smash “Block Rockin’ Beats”. Younger fans may know Schoolly’s work from the Cartoon Networks’ wildly successful Aqua Teen Hunger Force, for which he crafted the legendary theme song and contributes voice-overs.

Bahamadia is a Philadelphia-born hip hop artist, a DJ who later became an MC. As a member of Gang Starr Foundation, she released her critically-acclaimed debut album entitled Kollage in 1996. The album featured production by Guru and DJ Premier of Gangstarr. Kollage was followed in 2001 by BB Queen, an EP release. Bahamadia is a respected lyricist in hip hop and is known for her silky, subdued monotone delivery. More recently, Bahamadia has made guest appearances on tracks by artists including Talib Kweli, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Jedi Mind Tricks and Planet Asia, and through her association with the Philadelphia hip hop collective Army of the Pharaohs. Her latest album, Good Rap Music, was released in 2006.

Fanfarlo and Freelance Whales December 10th at Johnny Brenda’s

Fanfarlo
This band is going to be huge (they already sold out Kung Fu Necktie in advance). Hailing from London, they have been winning over audiences for years with a charming brand of indie pop-folk. Led by Swedish songwriter Simon Balthazar, Fanfarlo was formed in 2006, and soon began touring and steadily releasing new music. In 2008, the group headed to the studio to record their first full-length album – Reservoir, was released earlier this year. The band’s style of indie pop feels familiar (Arcade Fire & Beirut) and yet very new. In addition to the normal lineup of drums, bass and guitars, the group employs an array of instruments ranging from keyboards and mandolin to horns. Get on the bandwagon now!

Oh shit – Internet hype alert! Freelance Whales found one another in late 2008, amidst a strange amalgam of unfamiliar instruments, and precariously composed pop songs. Using whatever musical gadgets they happened upon (mostly harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums, waterphone), the five members worked at crafting songs with interlocking rhythmic patterns, lush textural layering, and an engaged group-vocal energy. Freelance Whales can be spotted in the streets and humble venues of New York City, and have just released their first full-length record, Weathervanes, independently. The band’s sentimental and heartwarming pop-folk brings to mind the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Le Loup and Ra Ra Riot.

The Slackers December 20th at the Theatre of Living Arts

The Slackers are a New York City band, formed in Brooklyn in 1991. The band’s sound is a mix of ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, soul, garage rock, and jazz. The Slackers’ notability is credited to their prolific career, tours of North America, Europe, and elsewhere, and signing to notable punk label Hellcat Records.

Self Medication, their latest release (2008), brings this unifying eclecticism to a new level. “Everyday is Sunday” evokes equally Joe Gibbs-era reggae and the Kinks. “Don’t you want a man” has a loping groove somewhere between Bob Marley and the Meters. “Stars” is pure unabashed Beatlemania while “Don’t Have To” evokes Elvis and Rockabilly. As the band matures you can’t tell anymore where the reggae ends and the rock begin. It’s become the Slackers.

Lotus and MSTRKRFT December 31st at the Electric Factory

MSTRKRFT (pronounced “Master-craft”) is an electronic music group from Toronto (The Beaches), Ontario, Canada who are signed to Last Gang Records. The group was started in 2005 by Jesse F. Keeler formerly of Death from Above 1979 and Al-P (Alex Puodziukas) formerly of the Mississauga electropop group Girlsareshort. Al-P was also the producer for Death from Above 1979s album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine as well as several of (Jesse’s former band) Black Cat #13’s records. The duo has been close friends, as well as work partners, for a long time. MSTRKRFT also produced Die Mannequin’s first EP, How to Kill, and Magneta Lane’s second LP, Dancing With Daggers.

Lotus is known for concerts in which a complex light set up is used and their use of varying set lists that employ frequent group improvisation. The concerts are often recorded by amateur engineers (tapers) and posted online for others to listen to. The band has undertaken a number of tours and have performed at festivals including Jam on the River (Philadelphia, PA 2007 and 2008), Wakarusa (KS 2005, 2006, 2007), and the Rothbury Music Festival in July 2008 and 2009.

The band has performed several themed shows. On October 31, 2008 at the TLA in Philadelphia the show was billed as “Live Fast Die Young: the 27 Conspiracy”. Each of the 5 members dressed as a rock star who died at the age of 27 (Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Pigpen, and Jim Morrison) and the show featured covers by each of the respective bands. On Dec. 31, 2008 the band performed a show that included robot themed covers including Styx – “Mr. Roboto”, Alan Parson’s Project – “I Robot”, Flaming Lips – “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots: Part I”, Radiohead – “Paranoid Android”, and Daft Punk – “Robot Rock”. On Oct. 31, 2009 at Sonar in Baltimore the Halloween show was presented as “Protein Pills in the Labyrinth”. The band members dressed as different David Bowie characters (including Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, and Jareth) and played “Under Pressure”, “Fame”, “I’m Afriad of Americans”, “Space Oddity”, “Let’s Dance”, “Rebel, Rebel”, “Suffragette City” along with original Lotus material.

To kick off 2010, Lotus is planning a New Year’s run beginning on December 29 at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA. The band will be ringing in the new year with fans and friends the The Electric Factory in Philadelphia, PA!

Nutcracker 1776 is a different take on the timeless classic.

The Holiday season is upon us yet again, and that means that there are plenty of upcoming events that are set to spread good cheer. Some are timeless musicals like the Nutcracker, while others include a karaoke gong show hosted by a villain that makes The Grinch look like a softy. Here’s a look at some fun events to check out this holiday season.

Twisted Sister: A Twisted Christmas at Keswick Theatre

Twisted Sister is an American heavy metal band from New York City. Their work fuses the shock tactics of Alice Cooper, the rebellious mood of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the extravagant image of glam rock bands such as New York Dolls notably for the makeup. Musically, the band implements elements of traditional heavy metal bands such as Judas Priest, along with a style that is similar to early glam metal bands. The band is generally categorized as glam metal for their earlier work, although the band does not consider themselves to be so. Videos of hit singles “We’re Not Gonna Take It” (a #21 hit in the US) and “I Wanna Rock” (US #68) ran almost constantly on MTV. Their pervasive slapstick comedy proved a change of pace for the genre and gave the band a distinctive appeal. The band separated in 1967, and have stayed apart for close to a decade. But they have since reunited for several tours, and are currently on tour in support of their Christmas album, A Twisted Christmas. They stop in Philly to play the Keswick Theatre on December 2nd.

Christmas Village in Philadelphia

Christmas Village in Philadelphia is an outdoor Holiday market event at Dilworth Plaza on the west side of City Hall Philadelphia from Thanksgiving till Christmas Eve. Vendors in more than 50 wooden booths and timber houses which form a medieval village will sell European food, sweets and drinks as well as international seasonal holiday gifts, ornaments and high quality arts and crafts.

Thousands of lights at booths and trees will integrate Dilworth Plaza into the scenery of the illuminated city hall. A central stage will be the place for live performances of local choirs, orchestras and bands. There will also be a Santa’s house and the official municipal Christmas tree including its tree lighting ceremony. Christmas Village offers its visitors a unique opportunity for shopping and enjoying European specialties in a Christmassy atmosphere. November 27th through December 24th.

U2 360º Tour comes to Seattle June 2010

The weirdly-named Loser’s Lounge has been doing tribute concerts to various artists “from ABBA to the Zombies, sometimes with the honorees present,” and sometimes with famous musicians dropping in.
Now housed at Joe’s Pub, which is part of the Public Theater, the Loser’s Lounge will be presenting a special year-end tribute to Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. Included in the show will be selections not just from Michael Jackson’s solo career but from the Jackson 5 as well as hits by Janet and Jermaine.

Some have called Jamaica’s mightiest record producer, the one and only Lee “Scratch” Perry, a madman. He may be one reggae’s longest-lived patron saints, but he also managed to drive Bob Marley out of his stable of recording artists, clash with The Clash over the production values of “Police and Thieves” and, not least, burn his own recording studio down to rid it of “unclean spirits.” (They don’t call him “The Upsetter” for nothing.) This winter, a precious few US audiences will have the chance to witness Perry walk the border between madness and genius live on stage.

Ever the eccentric, Perry’s live show as every bit as surreal as the dozens of singles and albums released under his multitude of pseudonyms since the early 1960s. Expect sound system antics de rigueur, the most unintelligible stage banter this side of Shane MacGowan and, of course, and that drop…drop…drop dub beat.

Bob Dylan will be playing the latest (and possibly last) leg of his current tour at the United Palace Theater in New York at 7:30 p.m. from Tuesday, November 17th to Thursday, November 19th. Prices are $59-$129.

The “Sound of Music” debuted on Broadway 50 years ago today, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. It ran for the next three and a half years, 1443 performances. In 1965, it was made into the movie starring Julie Andrews.
The hills of Manhattan may not be alive with the Sound of Music (there aren’t that many hills), but a bookstore near Lincoln Center will be this afternoon, with its songs sung by one of its original stars and by one of Broadway’s newest, Kate Baldwin of “Finian’s Rainbow.”
At 4:30 today you can meet Theodore Bikel and hear Kate Baldwin sing The Sound Of Music at a special event at the Barnes and Noble near Lincoln Center (Barnes and Noble, 1972 Broadway at 66 Street, 3rd floor Events Room). Also on hand will be Mary Rodgers (daughter of composer Richard Rodgers); Anna Crouse (widow of co-author Russel Crouse); veterans of the original Broadway company; Ted Chapin, President of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization (; Laurence Maslon, author of THE SOUND OF MUSIC COMPANION. The event is from 5-6PM and will open with Kate Baldwin singing “The Sound of Music,” and will end with Theodore Bikel singing the song he first introduced to the world 50 years ago today: “Edelweiss.”
The original cast album has been reissued in a 50th anniversary edition. The number of hit songs from this one musical is a bit hard to fathom, and harder to get out of your craw:

The Annual Holiday Punk Rock Flea Market has been announced.

R5 Productions is one of the leading independent concert promoters in the country. And Sean Agnew and his crew do a good job of making all ages shows in Philadelphia a a lot more widespread. But with the insurance policy, equipment, supplies, and then some that they have to maintain year in and year out; it’s not always an easy thing to do. And that’s the main reason they host two Punk Rock Flea Markets every year, so that they have an extra way of generating proceeds towards their increasing funds. And that’s all the more reason why you should attend this event.

“THE PUNK ROCK FLEA MARKET !
It’s that time again for the bi-annual (twice a year) PUNK ROCK FLEA MARKET! Our most popular reoccurring event/show/whatever (by far). We had over 4000 visitors and 100+ tables of old records, clothes, art, music, food, junk, bicycles, stereo equipment, instruments, automobiles, tools, posters, furniture, computers, skateboards and lots of other stuff this past February. It’s all going down this weekend at The Starlight Ballroom (right below 9th & Spring Garden Sts)

To meet the increasing demand of people wanting to sell their stuff at this we have spread it out over two days for Holiday Season : Saturday Dec 19th and Sunday Dec 20th. Each day will have entirely different sellers (not a single repeat seller). Your admission donation is good for entry both days, so you can come in and out as many times as you would like over the weekend! In addition there will be much more room to shop compared to flea markets in the past as we eliminated 25 or so tables from the usual set up (but since it’s over two days, there are more total tables…get it?)

All proceeds raised will go towards the purchase of necessary equipment and supplies to ensure that all ages shows continue to remain a reality at The First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia – mainly our payment for our liability insurance policy. The left over funds will go to purchasing a new smaller PA system so we can do a few smaller shows at all ages spaces this spring (instead of doing them in our 21+ venues). Do not let the “name of the event” lead you to believe that it’s just punk records, clothes etc. – it’s a full on flea market with everything from furniture, to laptops / computers , to stereo equipment, to handmade apparel, to vegan treats, information from various non profit groups, book stores, artists selling their work, bicycles & skateboards and whatever else they can fit onto the ballroom floor at The Starlight Ballroom.”

Last year’s Summer Flea Market introduced the idea of having two flea markets over a single weekend, and it worked so well that their bringing it back permanently. So it means that each day will have different vendors selling their wares. It also gives more people a fair opportunity to register as sellers. This is good since the holiday season will easily generate a huge demand.

As always their is a $3 entry fee which goes toward supporting R5 Productions and their shows. Personal tables at the Flea market cost $45 for a half table, and $65 for a full. Business tables at the Flea Market cost $65 for a half table, and $85 for a full.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING :

1) There will be 40 less tables than usual for this event, in order to make up for it the flea market will be held over two days. At the time being you can only sign up for one day (not both!)

2) We are continuing w/ two pricing levels. One for people’s old junk and one for “businesses”. Businesses means anything that’s not personally yours. This includes vintage clothing, record distro, t-shirts, anything crafted, baked, painted, created, screen printed, manufactured etc. This is to ensure the flea market actually remains a flea market! Tables for individuals are $65 for a full table (still not to shabby – again 4000+ people came through the door in July). Half tables will be $45. The darling duo from down south that sing about Martha’s Vineyard are back together touring and will be at The Mint tonite. Tickets are still available at the door but you can leave your flannel shirts at home L.A. Really, it’s O.K.  I’m sure Jack and Cary will as well.

Facebook and Twitter have been full of lines from their songs today, “that girl over there she’s got mahogany hair,” as Los Angeles fans get ready to hear their favorites performed life for the first time in years.  They have done some shows since breaking up, but this tour which will last, with some breaks, through til a final show in the Vineyard.

The band that met at Southern Methodist University in 1988 and broke up in 1997 have been touring and doing shows the past few years, but have kicked it up a notch.  In 2008 they released an album Promise of Summer and this year brought Live From Atlanta and Acoustic Summer.  But what we really want to know is, are they gonna play all the best from their earlier albums, Live from The Americas, Bringing on the Weather and Finest Hour?  I couldn’t pick a fav, I tell ya’.

Late Shift, Get to Know Me Better and Vineyard are clearly going to be played tonite at The Mint or I personally know women that will riot at the show.

Doors open at 7pm, Show starts at 8pm, and Jackopierce goes on at 9pm.
