The Freedom Glory Project, a band performing in NYC made up of five musicians born in Iran and a fifth raised there, was formed in the wake of the protests against the June 12, 2009 election in Iran. The group quickly composed and recorded a music video, “Freedom, Glory, Be Our Name,” an American-style folk song “with a sprinkling of ancient Persian poetry” which begins with somebody rocking on a Persian carpet.
One verse:
you think your power is secure
when you startle us with the threat of war
but fear has its limits too
we are no longer scared of you
My former colleague Ali, himself an Iranian-American activist, tells me that Freedom Glory Project will be performing tonight at Washington Square Park, to mark the 18th of Tir – a significant date in Iran, since it is the tenth anniversary of the day that Iranian authorities attacked protesters in their dormitories, setting off even larger protests – the largest since the birth of the Islamic Republic of Iran…until now.
I can’t find confirmation of the park concert, but Freedom Glory Project is definitely scheduled to appear at the Mercury Lounge on Sunday night, July 19th.

The members of Freedom Glory Project, most of them now living in New York City, are:
Raam, the lead singer from Hypernova, an underground rock band originally from Tehran.
Johnny B, an Iranian born/New York City-raised composer, vocalist, poet, and front man of the musical group Electric Black. (He’s the guy with a lot of hair.)
Ali Eskandarian, singer-songwriter.
Esfand, ex-front man of “Landlord”, a New York City rock band.
Nariman Hamed, filmmaker.
