Tre swanky “metropolitan Mexican” (you heard it here first) eatery Rosa Mexicano will be shaking off post-Halloween withdrawal pains with an extended, month-long celebration of Central America’s macabre Day of the Dead festival through November 22nd.

In keeping with the holiday’s tradition of offering to fresh eats to the returned souls of the loved ones passed, the chain of upscale Mexican eateries — which now boasts locations in Washington, DC, Atlanta, Miami, and Los Angeles, in addition to its three flagship New York City restaurants — has prepped a special El Día de los Muertos menu in tribute to one of their late founders, Josefina Howard.

Unlike your typical Day of the Dead family fiesta, however, all that grub doesn’t have to go uneaten by mortal mouths. Among the pleasures of the flesh (or is that palate?) available to Mexicano patrones is a smoked chicken, roasted pumpkin and goat cheese tamale; a slow cooked cassoulet stew of duck, chorizo, red beans and pomegranate; and, naturally, a pumpkin-based cocktail with Kahula and spiced rum.

On Sunday, November 8th, the Atlanta Les Dames d’Escoffier International will fete the success of women in the culinary, beverage and hospital industries with their 9th Annual Afternoon in The Country Event, held at the lovely Serenbe. Proceeds from the day’s event will benefit the non-profit organization’s scholarship fund to support womens’ ventures in these fields and in support of Georgia’s growing organic farming community.

The Culinary Historians of Atlanta are putting on an “Eating History” event! On Monday, November 16th, come hear food historian Andrew F. Smith talk about the evolution and major moments in American Cuisine. If you’re even a little bit of a “foodie,” you’ll be intrigued! His new book,

Eating History: Turning Points in American Cuisine

is the “appetizer,” so to speak for his talk that night, and you’ll learn all kinds of interesting things about our past and current eating, dining, and cooking habits . . . a unique view into the way America eats! Where did our current foodie culture of celebrity chefs come from, why do certain restaurants “make it” and others don’t, where do our grocery-buying habits start (and evolve), what IS healthy eating?? Those are the things he’ll address, and more!

Love Goldens? Just love dogs, period?? Or maybe just need some “happy” on a Sunday??? Then come out for today’s Goldenrama event, by the awesome organization Adopt a Golden Atlanta. From 12-4pm on October 25th (rain date Nov 8th), bring your pup and family or friends – it’s ok to come without a dog, too!! – and enjoy everything from dog training tips you can learn to doggie games, to a silent auction and more.

Adopt a Golden Atlanta is Georgia’s largest Golden Retriever rescue organization. They work hard to find permanent, loving homes for Goldens, avoid having these dogs become strays or adding to the shelters’ overpopulation, and to promote awareness and education about dog spaying and neutering, good dog veterinary care, obedience training and more. A nonprofit, AGA relies on the hard work of volunteers and the donations of people who care about the cause.

Now, this is seriously cool. Everyone knows that Gatsby was stylin’ and this fundraiser is “in his spirit”! On Sunday, October 25, The Great Gatsby Lawn Party: The Argyle Edition, will raise funds for breast cancer awareness and Habitat for Humanity of South Fulton County.

Held on the Oglethorpe University Lawn, the event will feature music (jazz, of course!), signature cocktails, mixing-and-mingling, and more. There are two ticket options, regular admission for $35 and VIP (which of course comes with extra “goodies” like a great gift bag) for $75. Creating the music for the Star Wars films has been an exciting and wonderful experience for me, and I have therefore derived particular pleasure in assembling a compendium of themes from all of the films to be presented in Star Wars: In Concert.
The Editors of Lucasfilm have created an original film montage to accompany each of the musical selections, and in the process. I believe that a singular and unique Star Wars experience has been born.

My hope is that audiences will derive real pleasure from the event, as well as celebrate in a new and joyous way, the dazzling originality of the star wars saga.

Star Wars: In Concert is a unique event that combines John Williams’ unforgettable music, performed by a live symphony orchestra and chorus, with specially edited footage from six Star Wars films. Through each musical piece, audiences will experience the key themes, characters and story elements of the epic Star Wars saga from a new perspective. taking a remarkable excursion into the heart of a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

A true multi-media experience; Star Wars: In Concert features a large, specially constructed LED screen – one of the largest screens ever taken on tour – onto which the newly edited film sequences will be projected and synchronized to a live performance of music from John Williams scores. Anthony Daniels, the actor who portrays C-3P0 in all six films, will introduce each segment of the two hour show, guiding audiences through the Star Wars story in a fresh and exciting way.

Historic Oakland Cemetery is putting on their Halloween Tours this year on October 23-25. This is the only time of the year that the Cemetery stays open “after dark” and the tours are done up in high spooky style!

During “Capturing the Spirit of Halloween” 2009 Tours, visitors will hear stories about Atlanta and its citizens from across the years. Also included are tours of the gorgeous candlelit mausoleums around the Cemetery, and refreshments will be available for purchase along with souvenirs for sale in the Cemetery’s gift shop.

Bring a flashlight and wear comfortable walking shoes! Tickets are on sale now: $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, and they must be purchased in advance of the tour.
