Best Family Parks in Denver

Belleview Park Train

Belleview Park is our pick as the best family park in Denver.

My family has a cherished tradition of exploring the large variety of parks in Denver which we call “Park Jumping.”  Each week in the summer we take a picnic and visit a different park in the Denver metro area.  Then we rate each one for its fun factor, our criteria to be among the best family parks in Denver.  Out of all of the parks we’ve visited (over 50), there are two we rank high on our list; E. B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park in Northglenn and Great Plains Park in Aurora.  But the park that stands apart from all of the rest is Belleview Park in Englewood.

1) Belleview Park

Belleview Park has so many unique things to offer!  It has a beautiful miniature train that runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day, with the friendliest conductor I’ve ever met.  It also has a petting zoo where your kids can pet all kinds of gentle farm animals including cows, sheep, chickens, and pigs.  You can even milk a fiberglass cow to see just how good your milking skills really are!

The park is also distinctive in that it has a shallow stream running through the middle of it where kids can safely play and cool down on those hot summer days.  (If you bring a bucket, you can even catch crawdads!) It has a large playground, basketball and tennis courts, a baseball field, and nature trails.  This park also includes what every mother longs for – bathrooms and drinking fountains.

2) E. B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park

E. B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park has a lot to offer!  At beautiful Webster Lake, with a lovely water fountain in the middle of the lake, you can rent pedal boats and fish.  This park has an incredible sensory playground made for tots up to teens and separated so the little ones can play safely.  There is a small stage (here’s your opportunity to become famous), basketball courts, and even a few water geysers to play in on those hot summer days.

Pedal Boats

Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.*
Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.*
*Last Boat goes out at 7 p.m.

3) Great Plains Park

Great Plains Park – 20100 E. Jewell Avenue, Aurora, CO 80012  Map it

Great Plains Park is amazing because of its sprayground which you have to see to believe. This is a super fun water feature that kids can enjoy for hours and hours completely FREE!  Besides the sprayground, there are fitness stations, playgrounds, a basketball court, sports field, and softball diamond.

The sprayground operates daily from 10 am to 8 pm until October, weather permitting

* I would love comments about your favorite Denver area park, and what makes it the favorite for your family.

    Hello, Karen Barnhart.
Thank you for your site and reviews. As a new father of young twins, I am learning to appreciate Denver parks more each week. We love it here in Colorado, and in all the seasons. I’ve lived here for years and never noticed the many activities and travel adventures close to home for the youngest explorers. Now it is the priority for our weekends and short getaways. Looking forward to learning about and discovering all this beautiful state has to offer. We will visit often.
Do you have have some young child specific articles, links or recommendations, please?
    Warm regards,
    Charles
