Alex Hilhorst

I am a graduate of NYU, where I studied film & television. I was born and raised in NYC, though I've been flirting with the idea of moving to Los Angeles. I am obsessed with pop culture and entertainment. I'm a geek and an avid gamer and write game reviews. I'm also an aspiring screenwriter. Ever since I saw "LOST" I've dreamt about becoming a TV writer and someday even a showrunner for my own series. If that doesn't pan out though, I'd be happy to be a critic. My favorite movie is "Pulp Fiction" and my favorite videogame is "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." Favorite TV show is a toss-up between the new "Battlestar Galactica" and "Farscape." Favorite band is Nine Inch Nails.

    ‘Tera Nova’ Recap- The Runaway

“It’s like a cartoon,” one of my coworkers said of Terra Nova recently. “All these things happen, and then next week, it’s all erased and everything goes back to normal.” It’s true- in many respects, Terra Nova more closely resembles another FOX series, The Simpsons than it does the high concept dramas...

    ‘Terra Nova’ Recap: What Remains

And so once again, we return to Terra Nova a.k.a. Land of the Lost Ambercrombie Models. While the dinosaur SFX continues to hold up, it’s almost sad now to see how little effort was put into this series. Week after week, FOX shovels a highly corporatized, manufactured and plastic product to its...

    ‘Terra Nova’ Recap – Instinct

Oh, boy. Where to even start? Viewers who were hoping Terra Nova might rebound after its less than stellar premiere last week were probably disappointed by Monday’s new installment, “Instinct.” Even the introduction of Rene Echevarria as showrunner couldn’t save the ep from feeling stiff and awkward. Right off the bat it...

Much hype has been built around FOX’s new dinosaur drama Terra Nova, but does this week’s premiere, entitled “Genesis” live up to it? Short answer: no. Geeks were practically frothing at the mouth when the series was first announced about a year back, particularly when Steven “the Beard” Spielberg slapped his name...

    Falling Skies Season Finale Recap

It’s been a rocky road in this first season of TNT’s Falling Skies, an ambitious new drama that has Steven Spielberg’s name attached to it. Though the show has posited some cool ideas and a fresh take on the alien invasion archetype, it often sugar-coats the dismal survival scenario it presents and...

‘Falling Skies’ Recap – What Hides Beneath

WHOA. So much happened in last night’s Falling Skies that one barely knows where to start in recapping it. One thing’s for sure: after last week’s disappointing resolution of the “Sanctuary” arc, “What Hides Beneath” was a welcome return to form and a delicious tease for what’s to come in the two-hour...

‘Falling Skies’ Recap – Sanctuary, Part 2

Last night I returned home from a weekend getaway (or should I say melt-away) and before watching the new episode of Falling Skies that I’d DVR’d, caught a tweet from the AV Club, who claimed the episode was terrible. This colored my opinions going in, and also made me wonder about the...

‘Falling Skies’ Recap – Sanctuary, Part 1

Another great episode of Falling Skies, some might even call it the best, the first segment of two-parter “Sanctuary” saw the show delve much deeper into the minds and schemes of the Skitters while also highlighting the human on human conflicts that would arise in an alien invasion scenario. The show had...
