 ostly International
\n
\nFor this year's Decibel Festival\, Ghostly's takin
g over the Baltic Room\, stuffing its swank\, cherry-paneled interior with
live sets from four of our finest.
\n
\nSan Francisco-based producer/graphi
c designer Scott Hanson (aka Tycho) makes his Seattle debut with a set of h
is own nostalgic\, sun-drenched downtempo compositions. Tycho was recently
flagged as one of URB magazine's "Next 100" artists to watch\; his single A
drift/From Home was released on Ghostly last May.
\n
\nBenjamin Wynn (aka D
eru) has released tracks on Neo Ouija\, Merck\, and Mille Plateaux – as w
ell as on Ghostly's Idol Tryouts Two compilation. The LA-based producer twi
sts breakbeats into dark\, guttural new shapes\, gilding them with eerie be
lls and pianos until they glow with a burnished inner light.
\n
\nSeattle's
own abstract rhythm-butcher Jeff McIlwain (aka Lusine) is a local treasure
 . His 2004 full-length Serial Hodgpodge (and its subsequent remix album\, P
odgelism) is a singular mix of glitchy\, whiplash-inducing polyrhythms and
 micro-sliced vocal samples.
\n
\nRecent Ghostly signee The Sight Below –
another Seattle local – debuts his live PA of dark beats\, filtered guita
rs\, and bottomless melancholy. The artist runs bowed\, slide and lightly p
icked guitar through a series of loopers\, reverb boxes\, and delay units\,
creating a haunting drone that's underpinned by subtle\, pulsing kick drum

world the white-hairs will speak with stars in their eyes the legend of a d
ance party that took place on a simple Saturday afternoon at Volunteer Park
in the heart of Seattle. The storytellers will drool and twitch just a bit
as they describe the funky dance mania\, the spontaneous combustion that e
rupted one pleasant day as a thousand dancing freaks jumped and spun and ye
lled and disrobed and had the dirtiest\, filthiest fun of their lives with
performers who were creating not only for the dance floor but also with it\
, for the magic moment of Now and the community who lives for it. They will
speak of the inaugural live music showcase in the great outdoors of the ci
ty\; they will speak of Decibel in the Park.
\n
\nCurrently the Glitch Mob
is straight conquering the known and unknown world with their celebration o
f distorted\, sample-heavy\, bass-ridden sounds and bizarre noises from oth
er planets cut in with intelligent hip hop lyrics\, unexpected beat switche
s\, and the distinct flavor of music history in the making. A fun ferocity
and love of the outdoor aesthetic unites the artists performing at Decibel
in the Park and the crowd will concur ecstatically with no choice but to wo
rship at the altar of dance. With fellow bass fanatics and bold risk-takers
Noisemaker\, Michael Manahan\, Jacob London and local crunk-band sensation
Truckasaurus\, the lineup for dB in the Park is so sick\, it’s practical
ly dying. The obese bass beats will no doubt crazy-make the crowd into a sc

five-thousand fevers\, you will foam at the mouth and will crawl out of th

a tribal land populated by those who just can’t get enough and don’t ca

Afterhours with homegrown beats laid thick with funky bass and infused with

warped energy that Eskmo generates for the dance floor makes people smile\

more heavily distorted rips of music that addict you like a junkie to the
growl-happy sounds. The musical experience that is Eskmo is not only for th

DESCRIPTION:Pop and electronic music have celebrated a collaborative histor
y for nearly 30 years. Since the early days of New Wave and Industrial musi
c of the 70’s and 80’s\, pop has embraced technology\, offering a synth
etic sound palette that opened doors for hip hop\, electro\, techno and con
temporary synth pop. With the recent advent of computer-based production to
ols has come a seemingly endless array of creative possibilities. Through t
he 90’s underground sounds of digital pioneers like Aphex Twin began infl
uencing pop music and before long\, pop icons like Radiohead were diving in
headfirst and fully incorporating digital technology\, which offered incre
ased flexibility and precision\, unique sound design\, vocal treatments and
arrangements that were impossible with traditional hardware-based producti
on tools. This deconstruction of established pop music has been the focus o
f many contemporary subgenres ranging from abstract hip hop to indie pop to
underground dance music. The epicenter of this movement is Berlin\, home
to a plethora of electronic music composers embracing pop\, hip hop and ind
ie rock. Artists like Apparat\, Modeselektor\, Miss Kitten and Ellen Allien
have all proven that electronic sound works just as well on the radio or r
ock club as it does on the dance floor.
\n
\nHeadlining this international
bill we have two of Berlin’s finest\, Jahcoozi and Barbara Morgenstern.
Jahcoozi\, lead by London born Sri Lankan front woman Sasha Perera\, is a u
nique dance hybrid that brings together the political unrest of M.I.A. with
the frenetic beats of Modeselektor. Co-headlining the bill are Japanese bo
rn Tujiko Noriko and the Puerto Rican born quartet Balún\, both of whom co
njure dreamy pop landscapes that will appeal to fans of the female electron
ic pop stylings of Bjork and Mum. Opening the “Destructing Pop” showcas
e will be Careen Ajar\, making their Seattle debut with help from video gur
 u Scott Pagano.

DESCRIPTION:For the past 3 years Decibel has brought together some of dance
music’s most influential artists as part of the “Dirty Dancing” show
case. In previous years we’ve hosted Green Velvet\, Speedy J\, Robert Bab
icz and 3 Channels\, all of whom whipped dB audiences into a hedonistic fre
nzy of dance floor mayhem. This year we’ve raised the bar with three of u
nderground dance music’s most respected newcomers\, all of whom have been
praised as the future of dance music in their own right through countless
awards\, massive club/festival exposure and critically acclaimed production
s and remixes. For those with an ear for dirty beats and a heart for relent
less baselines\, this showcase is a must.
\n
\nMaking his Seattle debut is
none other than Toronto based whiz-kid Deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) whose
production the past two years have made him the most sought-after producer
in the electro house\, progressive and techno scenes alike. The key to Joe
l’s massive popularity comes from his incredibly diverse production outpu
t and whimsical live performance\, which findshas him adorned in a handmade
mouse helmet complete with sound- activated LEDs lights- you have to see i
t to believe it. Aside from headlining dance stages at enormous parties lik
 e Ultra\, Coachella\, DEMF and Creamfields\, Deadmau5 is also the most down
loaded and critically acclaimed artist on the most important download site
for dance music on the planet\, Beatport (nominated for 6 Beatport Music Aw
 ards\, 4 of which he took 1st place\, including “Most influential\, forwa
rd-thinking and relevant person of the year”). Co-headling the showcase a
re Italy’s Luca Bacchetti (Wagon Repair\, Samuri.FM) and the Chicago prod
uction duo Santiago and Bushido\, who will be performing a debut live set b
efore Deadmau5 that is could very well steal the show. Opening will be the
Portland-based techno producer Let’s Go Outside\, whose recent releases o
n the UK-based Soma label have had him touring the world over.

DESCRIPTION:It is impossible to reference techno without paying homage to i
ts motherland\, Detroit. Over the years Detroit has remained the pinnacle o
f the genre through festivals like DEMF and techno mainstays like Derrick M
ay\, Jeff Mills\, the Underground Resistance label and quite possibly Detro
it’s most influential producer and techno activist\, Carl Craig. As found
er of one of Detroit’s most respected imprints (Planet E) and its premier
festival (DEMF)\, Carl has played an insurmountable role in the exposure o
f Detroit Techno to the rest of the world. Part missionary and part innovat
or\, Carl’s productions have consistently remained relevant in the ever-c
hanging world of electronic dance music. For nearly 20 years\, Carl has bee
n producing classic dance music that has bridged the gap between soul and s
ilicon\, helping to launch a revolution in electronic music that has inspir
ed the world. With over a dozen monikers and well over a hundred releases t
o his credit\, Carl is quite possibly the most influential dance producer i
n North America\, if not the world. As a DJ\, Carl’s track selection and
skills behind the decks are legendary\, and he has performed at nearly ever
y major club and festival around the world. Simply put\, Carl Craig is the
man when it comes to techno and we’re incredibly excited to have him back
in Seattle for the first time in over a decade.
\n
\nThough his birth cer
tificate says Texas\, Matthew Dear’s true calling came from Detroit. Infl
uenced by the early sounds of Detroit Techno\, Matthew began producing his
own brand of underground dance music that paid homage to the classics while
offering something fresh in the way of vocals. In 2004 Matthew decided to
focus on this more techno-centric production with a new moniker\, Audion\,
whose first EP “Kisses”\, released on Spectral Sound\, took the dance w
orld by storm. The new sound was rawer\, dirtier and contained infectious h
ooks often associated with early techno hits by producers like Green Velvet
\, Dan Bell and Richie Hawtin. After the equally unforgettable releases “
Just Fucking” and “The Pong” EP\, Audion quickly became a household n
ame in the techno community. Since then\, Audion has delivered track after
track of quality techno that has made Dear both a go-to remixer and world-r
enowned DJ. For the first time in several Seattle appearances\, Matthew Dea
r will be performing live as Audion.
\n
\nOpening the showcase will be a
debut Seattle set by Paxahau resident DJ Chuck Flask\, who is largely respo
nsible for the amazing roster of talent DEMF has put together the past thre
e years under Paxahau’s leadership. Chuck’s fantastic taste in undergro
und dance music should offer a welcome introduction to a night filled with
both the legacy and innovative spirit of Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Over the years Decibel has held a tradition of choosing one sho
wcase that offers something for nearly everyone\, regardless of his or her
knowledge and/or experience with electronic music. What tied these showcase
s together was the undeniable talent of those performing. This year we are
proud to announce that no line up we have ever assembled compares to this y
ear’s finale\, which contains four headliners\, each hailing from a diffe
 rent country.
\n
\nOpening the finale this year will be a return performan
ce by Static Discos recording artist Fax\, whose 2005 Decibel performance b
eautifully brought together elements of dub\, house and regional Mexican mu
sic. Next up is the highly anticipated set by hip hop instrumentalist Flyin
g Lotus\, whose recent releases on Warp Records have made him one of the be
st reviewed artists of the past two years (Pitchfork’s “Best New Artist
” in 2008). The past year FlyLo has been on a tear performing at internat
ional festivals and sharing the stage with everyone from Talib Kweli to Les
Claypool. If Fax and FlyLo weren’t enough\, UK dub disciple The Bug will
be attacking the bass bins with his own flavor of dubstep and dancehall wh
ich is sure to raise the room temperature. MCing alongside The Bug will be
Jamaican-born lyricist Warrior Queen\, whose talents behind the mic have ma
de her a core member of the UK dubstep scene\; her vocals have been feature
d on Hyperdub\, Soul Jazz\, Tempa\, Rephlex and Planet Mu Records. Last but
not least is the production/DJ super duo of SuperMayer\, comprised of Komp
akt Records owner/recording artist Michael Mayer and Kompakt Recording arti
st Superpitcher. Known as two of the most charismatic and emotive DJs on th
e planet\, together SuperMayer have been known to bring crowds to their kne
es with non-stop dance marathons ranging from sexy midtempo dub to full-on
peak hour dance. For fans of the more sensual sounds of Kompakt records dan
ce catalog (Thomas Fehlmann\, The Field\, Gui Boratto\, etc)\, this will be
the icing on the cake. This year’s finale is by far our most ambitious s
howcase to date and should be the perfect ending to Decibel’s 5th year an
 niversary.

DESCRIPTION:Historically\, visual media art and electronic music have maint
ained a fruitful coexistence\, from the earliest mid-20th Century works of
Le Corbusier and Edgard Varêse to the most recent sensory extremes found i
n the likes of Ryoji Ikeda's digital multimedia environments. This relation
ship of the audio-visual in the realm of new media and sound has resulted i
n some of the most forward thinking works of the past few decades and fuele
d significant leaps forward in both application and development of media te
chnologies for live performance\, installations and video art. Since its in
ception Decibel has avidly explored this relationship through film\, VJ per
formances\, AV installations\, original art and multimedia workshops.
\n
\n

\nThis year\, in celebrating our fifth anniversary\, Decibel will be hosti
ng not one\, but two OPTICAL Multimedia Showcases as part of the 2008 progr
am. Both showcases will be exploring the intersections between audio and vi
deo technology through live real-time collaborations\, featuring leading-ed
ge artists in both the audio and video world.
\n
\n
\nPrevious OPTICAL Show
case has produced provocative and visionary performances from Ryuichi Kurok
 awa\, Speedy J & Scott Pagano\, Randy Jones and Raster-Noton's Olaf Bender.
This year continues that tradition with a diverse body of artists working
in abstract electronic music and new visual media including: magnetic tape
composer William Basinski (New York)\, Library Tapes (Sweden)\, software de
signer and author Akira Rabelais (Los Angeles)\, ambient composer Jeff Grei
nke (Tucson)\, filmmaker and motion graphics designer Scott Pagano (Los Ang
eles)\, Carole Kim (Los Angeles)\, offthesky (Kentucky)\, Son of Rose (Seat
 tle) and Scott Sunn (Seattle).

DESCRIPTION:When Erik Satie spoke of 'musical furnishings' in the late 19th
century to describe his miniatures for piano he couldn't have anticipated
nearly a century later Brian Eno would find inspiration in his work when co
ining the term "Ambient" to describe his seminal 1978 album "Music For Airp
orts". Like Satie\, Eno sought to define his minimalist\, atmospheric music
away from what he referred to as "the products of the various purveyors of
canned music" or what Satie viewed in his time as the opulence of the clas
 sical music world.
\n
\n
\nDecibel is once again proud to present an Ambie
nt Showcase complimentary in equal measure to these two historic musical ad
venturers. Previous Ambient Showcases have hosted rapturous performances by
the likes of Fennesz\, Murcof\, Dead Texan\, Biosphere and composers Harol
d Budd & Robin Guthrie. This year thematically features work at the vibrant
intersection of acoustic\, electric and electronic instrumentation in conj
uring works of sublime beauty\, atmosphere\, texture and sonic abstraction\
, with the focus on live instrumentation and performance. The four artists
in this years showcase all bring their own distinct variations on neo-class
ical\, cinematic soundtrack and evocative instrumental music including.
