DJ Able
Biography
I started on my path to become a turntablist in 1994 at the age of 18 in Oakland Ca. This is when I first decided in my mind that someday I would be a DJ. My life long homie Erik moved to SF in 1996 and was the first DJ to really show me the deeper world of Turntablism. I can still remember that sunny Bay Area afternoon in the city at Erik's flat in the Haight watching him just tear the shit out of a Skratch Piklz break record....That was when I was really sold. From that moment forward I have been lightweight-obsessed with all things related to turntables.
From 1996 to 2001 I basically paid dues in my lab learning my tools and getting my feet under me. In 2000 My fam and I moved from our little house in the 30's in Oakland back to Seattle where I had grown up. I strarted doing little gigs and giving beginner DJ lessons to make extra $$ and met up with a cat named Chikodi Chima who had a Tuesday night underground hip hop weekly at a club called NoiseLab (now Nuemo's). He hired me to hold down the night. That was my first club gig. From there I went on to help found the Project Mayhem crew/collective and to found The Elefaders as well as join The Universal Zulu Nation Seattle Chapter.
Over the years I have shared the stage with most of Seattle's hip hop community as well as international notables such as Prince Paul. Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, and Jazzy Jay to name a few.
I have been playing shows in the Seattle area on a regular basis for the last 6 to7 years and I am currently a monthly host of Zulu Radio on KBCS 91.3FM (Saturdays 10pm-12-am) and I play a weekly club night Saturdays at Grey Gallery and Lounge in Seattle.
