My good friend James Kirchmer invited me to see legendary piano player Eddie Palmieri perform at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley tonight but he (James) was unfortunately unable to go. He let me go in his place and instructed me that Thursday nights..."should be his (Eddie's) best set of the run... it's typically the night when his biggest fans get out... so the pressure is on to DELIVER..." When you're performing at the Jazz Alley, it's very difficult NOT to DELIVER any night.
On this night, Mr. Palmieri delivered a sizzling display of musical mastery. I need to keep this brief so let me say that the ensemble provided the security that only true talent can provide and allowed me to drift into the pure sounds and compositions. Mr. Palmieri, expressed his great love for Latin jazz through his dynamic piano solo's. All I could do was watch a master at work. Of the other band members; well, it's difficult to pick a particular musician that stood out. This ensemble on this performance 9:30pm gave their hearts to the music. I heard the waiter had to check to see if I was okay or in need of a trip to the emergency room. I was blown away and I guess it showed. Another great night for Jazz Alley and another great booking for Gary Bannister.
The Jazz Alley website lists the members of the band as: Eddie Palmieri (piano), Conrad Herwig (trombone), Michael Rodriguez (trumpet), Vincent “Little Johnny” Rivero (congas) Orlando Vega (bongo), Yosvany Terry (alto saxophone), Jose Claussell (Timbles), and Luques Curtis (bass).
According to http://www.eddiepalmierimusic.com - "Eddie Palmieri's musical career spans 50 years as a band leader of salsa and Latin jazz orchestras. His discography includes more than 32 titles. He has been awarded Nine Grammys..."
