Anaheim Ducks send down 12 players after two pre-season games
Joe DiPenta

Joe DiPenta skated with the Anaheim Ducks in the 2006-7 Stanley Cup season.

Defenseman and pro tryout Joe DiPenta had a lot of fans cheering him on, but for now they’ll have to do without him on NHL ice, since the Anaheim Ducks have sent him and 7 others to the AHL team in Syracuse, and another 4 players to the Junior Team.  Joe DiPenta is the only player sent down over the age of 22.

37 players remain on the Ducks team roster, including 5 goaltenders.  Jonas Hiller is expected to start most games, but Curtis McElhinney is back, and joined by the three youthful tryouts Full Right J.P. Levasseur ( age 23), Igor Bobkov (19), and Timo Pielmeier (21).

Despite the goaltender extravaganza, Hiller is the uncontested starter this season.  Fans might have noticed his long, flowing locks peeking out from under the goalie mask at training camp and in the second pre-season game against the Sharks.  Perhaps he’s planning on donating it like George Parros does to Locks of Love.

Bobby Ryan

The Anaheim Ducks made another move: right wing Bobby Ryan, who score the team’s only goal in the first pre-season game against the Coyotes, practiced at training camp as a center.  Although he skated a few games toward the end of last season in the position, the move is on a trial basis, and Randy Carlyle has indicated that it’s up to Ryan whether he gets to stay there.

Last night’s game versus the San Jose Sharks looked much better as the Ducks dominated new Sharks goaltender Antero Niittymaki.  Ducks veterans Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu sat out both pre-season games, but are expected to figure prominently in the regular season lineup.
