The King's Speech is one of the front runners at this year's Golden Globes.

Yes, it’s that time of year again – amidst the holiday fever, we’re also entering awards season, and the Golden Globes are the first to announce their nominees.

The Golden Globe nominees for 2011 are a mixed bunch, including a few outright surprises. As always, everyone will be looking at the movie nominations for a clue to the Oscars, and, as usual, the Golden Globes don’t disappoint in that regard. Oscar front-runners Black Swan, The King’s Speech and The Social Network are all represented, along with strong contenders like Inception and The Fighter. It’s good to see that the likes of Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) and Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) get a nod too.

As for the television nominations, the Golden Globes seem to be treading the same territory yet again. Mad Men, 30 Rock, Glee and Dexter all make an appearance, but it’s the new shows that may cause an upset on awards night. The Walking Dead is rightfully included in the nominees list, as is Idris Elba for his role in the excellent BBC miniseries Luther. And by the look of the nominations, Boardwalk Empire may be the show to overturn the Awards regulars.
