If Oscar has a neglected stepchild, it is surely the short film. They don’t get screened at the local multiplex — making them a virtual dead zone in the annual office pool — and, despite their status as a proving ground for up-and-coming filmmakers, they’re still relegated to sub-”Best Makeup” status once Hollywood’s ceremony of ceremonies rolls around. Lucky then that DC’s premier art house theatre, the Landmark E Street Cinema, is remedying the form’s predicament by giving audiences a chance to see all of this year’s Academy Award-nominated short films — both live action and animated — back-to-back and under one roof.
